Valve: Let Fans Fund Game Development

In a new interview with ABC Australia's Good Game, Valve CEO Gabe Newell stated that we should "let fans fund game development. Take a look:

“What I think would be much better would be if the community could finance the games. In other words, ‘Hey, I really like this idea you have. I'll be an early investor in that and, as a result, at a later point I may make a return on that product, but I'll also get a copy of that game.

So move financing from something that occurs between a publisher and a developer… Instead have it be something where funding is coming out of community for games and game concepts they really like, said Newell”

So basically you would be buying stock in Valve, and instead of giving you a dividend they give you the game they made.

What Bob Newell said on piracy has to be the smartest fight against piracy that i have heard yet. that philosophy can be applied to many things, not just piracy.

when gabe was talking about piracy and he went on to copy protection when installing it again to a new computer or whatever made me smile and go thats why i buy from steam


im sick of buying games that have bull **** copy protection and what gabe said about if you have a product that people want and delivers with everything that should be in it, people will buy it.

i wish other companys had the same point of view as gabe does

The idea sounds like it would only work if you really, really trusted the developers.

No.
I am not going to pay in advance for a product with a high failure rate, especially when I have no influence on the design etc.

I wouldnt do it for movies or books either.
