Activision: We Might Stop Having to Support Sony

Talking to the Times Online Bobby Kotick from Activison let go a pretty slip as to their stance on the seemingly overpriced PlayStation 3. Here is what he had to say:

I'm getting concerned about Sony; the PlayStation 3 is losing a bit of momentum and they don't make it easy for me to support the platform. It's expensive to develop for the console, and the Wii and the Xbox are just selling better. Games generate a better return on invested capital on the Xbox than on the PlayStation.

They have to cut the price, because if they don't, the attach rates [the number of games each console owner buys] are likely to slow. If we are being realistic, we might have to stop supporting Sony. When we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console — and the PSP too.

Will we be seeing CoD: MW2 on the Playstation 3 this year, leave your thoughts here!

I beileve there will be no prob with MW2 as it sells well and he did mention 2010 or 2011. Me thinks he was just touting off some steam or trying to make things happen his way by making a 'public' statement. Will Activision become like EA now that they are getting ginormous?!?! I've got a PS3 and the wife and I have gotten tons of fun out of it. The price of the PS3 was only 25% of the cost of my gaming pc. :S

A gaming PC can do a little bit more.

I don't know if it's just because I have just woken up but Alex, your post doesn't make any sense to me lol. I get the quote though :P

PS: PS3 is over priced, hence it has sold poorly, Sony only have themselves to blame and their terrible business plan.

It really is stupidly hard to develop for, we spent usually an extra month or so on the ps3 version of a cross console to iron it out.

The last 3 Madden and NHL titles, as well Facebreaker, FNR4, and NFS Undercover.

Plus throw in the fact that the PS3 hardware is more expensive and has more features as usual then all other consoles. As when I always purchase a Sony console I don't expect it to be cheap or have too much of a reduced price. As the end user can do so much more with their Playstation consoles then their other consoles.

I do agree that making it hard for developers and having such really tight hardware limits can be a real pain, but it's a console and only so much can be expected from a console, too much more and it's no longer a console but a PC. Which is where the consoles are headed and soon the term console might just disappear.

I do agree that making it hard for developers and having such really tight hardware limits can be a real pain, but it's a console and only so much can be expected from a console, too much more and it's no longer a console but a PC. Which is where the consoles are headed and soon the term console might just disappear.

Thankfully it doesn't seem to go the other way, PCs becoming consoles (even if Microsoft is trying a bit with the Games for Windows shenanigans)

The PS3 and the games are overpriced, at least here in Sweden. A PS3 costs at least twice as much as a 360, and the games are usually very expensive as well. Sure there's games like Killzone 2 that wouldn't be possible on 360, but usually the graphical detail are the same between games.

I do appreciate that they have free internet play though, and if I ever were to buy a PS3 or 360, it would be a PS3 just for the exclusives. Halo/GoW etc doesn't appeal to me
