EA's Mock Religious Protest Draws Anger

EA seems to have forgotten some of their common sense and committed a cardinal sin of their own: Don't involve religion in marketing. At this year's E3, EA hired a group of actors to stage a mock protest in front of the convention, condemning the use of religion and Hell in a videogame.

Apparently, some real Catholics were none too pleased with the stunt:
Margaret Cabaniss of InsideCatholic wrote, "It's been clear for a while now that the entertainment industry views Christians on the whole as priggish, thin-skinned fun-killers... Has anybody at EA actually read the Inferno?"

Judging from the early trailers released by Visceral Studios, the makers of DeadSpace, Cabaniss may be correct in her assumption that the sole resemblance to the actual Epic is the name and location.

Others are less incensed but still critical of EA's ploy:
Another blogger, at Catholic Video Gamers, wrote, "Gamers of all varieties will buy this product if its, well, actually a good game. So instead of engaging in a shamelessly anti-Christian stunt to promote your poor excuse of a product, maybe you ought to work on making this game, you know, something better than a blatant God of War rip-off and make it, ya know, something worthwhile?"

With EA having the release date set for Q1 of 2010, only time will tell whether EA's maneuver proved successful.

really looking forward to this game, the fact that religious groups are against it makes me more intrigued which is EA's obvious idea behind staging the fake protest to begin with.

They really aren't against it, that is until EA did this whole marketing stunt.

Worked well. Quite a good stunt to pull.

            Might start my own "rent-a-riot"

Yep my theory too, if it get's in the media, that's some free advertising right there all for pissing off a few Christians and let's be honest how often does that happen these days?

Hahaha, pwnt. This is actually quite creative on EA's part; I never would have considered it. :wee:
