IGN's Pitch - Modern Warfare: The Movie

If you want to see a motion picture made out of the Modern Warfare series, you aren't alone. IGN Movies UK has posted up their thoughts on bringing the game to the big screen. Take a look:
With Microsoft showing brand new footage from Modern Warfare 2 at E3 this week, it got us in the Entertainment Team thinking about how Infinity Ward's groundbreaking series of shooters might translate to the big screen.

Those who saw the truly spectacular trailer to MW 2 will have noticed how innately cinematic the franchise is, while it was also a reminder that the first instalment won plaudits not only for its immersive game play but also its narrative and character work as well (indeed it was honoured at this year's BAFTAs for both elements).

The first Modern Warfare saw you principally play as Sergeant "Soap" MacTavish - a green SAS recruit thrust into a brutal conflict between fascist paramilitary thugs The Ultranationalists and the free world. Lead by the evil Imran Zakhaev, they instigate a Civil War in Russia and a coup d'état in a fictional Middle Eastern country - all in the name of returning Russia to her former communist glory.

The plot sets up a series of explosive and action packed missions that see you hop manically from firefight to firefight, taking out soldiers, dogs, tanks and helicopters as you go.

It certainly works with a controller in your hand, but could the character-driven manic brilliance of Modern Warfare translate to the big screen? We here at IGN think so. Here's our purely hypothetical pitch for a big screen, megabucks, franchise opening instalment of Modern Warfare: The Movie. And if any Hollywood bigwigs decide to use this idea, we want a producer's credit...

I like the idea. Would certainly love to see the Chernobyl scenes depicted in the movie, and with such a great storyline, why should it only be limited to PCs and consoles?

Because the story is meant to get players involved in the game. The plot has been done many many times already on the big screen. Its nothing new. It would be called Navy Seals 2 or "Insert Chuck Norris Movie Titles Here."

For a game, it is awesome, but we are interacting with it. Unless we can interact with the movie, its not going to be that great.

Another movie from the "Terrorism" point of view.

I also don't see any point to it...the game already did it well, no need for a movie that will dumb it down/take shortcuts/add cheese to appeal to the masses. Most game/movie tie-ins fail hard.

And as others have said, this could be released as any action movie, with any title. Stolen nukes, renegade Russians, Middle East terrorists...it's all been done before. It was a good story as far as games go, but pretty mediocre when you think of it against "great" movies. The ending is also too sad/bleak for the majority of the movie-going public, so you know they'd change it.

This'll be something like "Behind Enemies Lines: Colombia."

                    BAD idea.
