Infinity Ward on the Modern Warfare 2 Name Change

Still wondering why the "Call of Duty" name has been taken out of Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2? Well thanks to a short video posted over on MTV Multiplayer Blog we have a straight answer from IW Community Manager FourZeroTwo. Hopefully this video will clear up any confusion still happening regarding the name change.

Makes sense I suppose. Could have gotten more confusing with the COD name attached.

I'm still calling it COD42 (Call of Duty 4: [Modern Warfare] 2). A friend of mine thought it was because Treyarch eff'd up the CoD name.

because MW2 is unprecedented as a direct sequal to CoD4 (never happened before) - they dropped the CoD.

Previous CoD titles had no relation to the ones that came before until now. Things have changed and so did the name.

Well, it's one of the reasons. But I think there's more to it as well.

Yes, it's a direct sequel, so a name change is valid, especially given some of the possible confusing combinations if the numbers were kept. But I think IW may want to also separate their work from Treyarch and/or the WWII genre of COD, to make it more distinct.

Given the brand power of the COD name, I am a bit surprised that Activision would allow, or want, them to drop COD from the title. I think it would've been easy to have 2 separate lines of games:
COD - Modern Warfare 2, 3, 4, etc
COD - World at War 2, 3, 4, etc

I think either Activision wanted to separate the brands further, and saw more profit in doing so, or IW played some hardball, and won. So whatever the real reasons were, it had to make sense money-wise for both IW and Activision to go along with it.
