More Americans Play Games Than Go To Movies

According to a new research study by the research firm NPD Group, more Americans play games than go to movies as seen from a 12 month analysis. Here's some more details on this new study:
According to The NPD Group, a leader in market research for the entertainment industry, nearly two out of three Americans (63 percent) have played a video game in the past six months. While that level of penetration does not begin to compete with music listening, which is nearly universal (94 percent), it exceeds the percentage of U.S. consumers who report going out to the movies (53 percent), during that same time period. Gaming is also benefiting from new outlets for playing. Overall 10 percent of U.S. consumers played video games on a social network. Five percent have paid to download a video game from the Web, which is an increase of nearly 2 percent since last year.

According to NPD’s March 2009 update to the “Entertainment Trends In America” consumer tracking study, which provides an in-depth look at U.S. entertainment consumption, the average gamer spent just over $38 per month on all types of gaming content, based on reported spending in the three months prior to March 2009. “As with video and music, sales of physical gaming products still account for the bulk of consumer spending on video games, but digital downloads and other delivery and game-play formats are also rising in popularity,” said Russ Crupnick, entertainment industry analyst for NPD.
NPD’s report revealed that one in three gamers (31 percent) bought a console video game or portable game over the past 12 months – a seven percentage point increase in traditional game purchasers compared with the year prior. Yet traditional gamers are also finding new ways to play: Among consumers who play console or portable games, 31 percent also played a game on a gaming Web site; 12 percent played on a social networking site; 19 percent played a game that came with their mobile phones; and 11 percent purchased and downloaded a game to a mobile phone.

“Video games account for one-third of the average monthly consumer spending in the U.S. for core entertainment content, including music, video, games,” said Anita Frazier, video games industry analyst for NPD. “While a portion of that share stems from the premium price of console games, we’re also seeing an overall increase in the number of people participating in gaming year-over-year.”

Does this study hold true to your daily life? Do you play more video games compared to going to movies?

    Yes.

I haven't went to the Cinema in ages.

And I rarely have the time to watch a full fledged feature film.

Games are more flexible, as you decide how long you want to play.

    Then again, I'm no American.

I havnt been to the cinema in years, due to the fact it costs about £7 per film, at that price its not worth it, and the cinema's cram people in so you cant sit comfortably

Yeah, Cinema prices are pretty high, you could just wait 3 months till its out on DVD and rent it for £3

Cinema, you watch the movie once for £7. Video games you spend about £40 and 'own' that game, so you can play it whenever you want, for as long as you want... and heck if you beat it quickly you can always trade it in for another game at a reduced price.

In some Cinemas you'll get tall people who sit directly infront of you and if you're small you won't be able to see the bottom part of the screen... (I'm a tall ish guy, but I usually slouch down if someone's behind me, since I know how annoying it'd be if I took up that bottom half of the screen)

Plus, you'll also get people who cough, sneeze, talk, whisper, laugh, scream, and even receive text messages... when you've got the DVD and watch it at your own house, you don't have to deal with all of that...

Video games, well everyone has a console or gaming computer, in almost every household... especially since the release of the Wii... There is way more games then there are movies, so it'd be pretty hard to watch more movies then play games.

During the Winter, you probably won't find too many people in the Cinema, so that makes it easier to just play a game at home.

Some people live far away from Cinemas, and therefore won't be able to go to the Cinema, so they'll usually end up playing video games.

I'd find it hard to believe that anyone goes to the Cinema more then they play video games. I'm sure there are some people, but compared to rest of the population, they would be rare to find.

As an American, I have to say you all are correct in your statements.

            1. In a four month span of movies, there may be 1 or 2 worth seeing, MAYBE.
            2. Depending on the theatre you go to, you are going to spend on average $12 per ticket.
            3. You have to put up with other annoying Americans.
            4. You can not kill anyone in the movie theatres without just cause.
4a. Cell phones going off is not just cause.

            So, its game time

I always wait for DVD because it's more enjoyable to watch at home -- when I want to. TV has become so boring, that I don't watch more than a couple of hours a week. When I get a new DVR, that'll change a little. But, if we get a BF3, I'll be moving the TV into storage... LOL.

I really never go to the movies anymore because I tend to wait for the DVD release and rent it for a dollar from redbox.

Let's see...pay $9 to see one movie for 1.5-2hrs, and I don't get to keep that movie vs. paying about $49.99 for a game that I can play over and over again for X amount of hours.

I used to go to the movies about 3-4 times a month, haven't been since Batman, and before that it had only been a couple of movies. It just cost way too much now. Pretty soon, you'll be able to just buy the dvd for the same cost as the movie.

Went to see a movie last weekend and the ticket was $10! They used to be $6.50. Needless to say, I don't go to the movies much, typically if it's something I want to see I'll wait for the digital rental version from my cable provider, $3.99-$6.99 = three day rental.

                      Student Discount makes cinema cheap.

Orange "Bring a friend" Tuesday also cheap.

Re: More Americans Play Games Than Go To Movies

I also see far fewer movies in a theatre than I used to. The only ones I really try to see there are big, epic, sfx movies that tend to lose something on the small TV screen (although that is getting better and better with big HD TV's, and the quality of Blu-Ray). But my friends and I rent DVD's much more frequently now instead - for many of the reasons mentioned above by others.
