Bash #108 - Are Mods Dead?

BASHandSLASH has their new bashcast up this week. It involves, as the title gives away, the topic of if mods are dead nowadays for the CoD series. Check below for some more info and be sure to listen as Jock Yitch always has interesting bashcasts involving the subject of CoD.

This week we introduce you to the two gentlemen behind TheCompanyhub.com: Buster and Jag-Five-O. They are on to talk about their own community and the phenomenon they have been noticing lately…the disinterest in modded versions of Call of Duty.

Modded servers are being found deserted in our community of late. It is a trend that started just after CoD2. We have noticed it. Buster and Jag have noticed it. And we’re sure you have too.

Why is this happening? Is it a generational thing? What can be done to reverse the trend?

Listen in for almost an hour of challenging thought and discussion about the relevance of modding in today’s Call of Duty community.

Click here to listen to the bashcast. Subscribe to these bashcasts, or at least continue to listen to them each week if you would really like to start knowing more about CoD and its community.

I would also like the opinions of our forums members on this topic. Are mods dead for CoD in your opinion? Or dying down even?

Re: Bash #108 - Are Mods Dead?

A 50MB map takes ~14 minutes for me to download, so that's the main reason I don't play on modded servers as much. Though, when/if I find a good one, it's a blast.

I also don't like hardcore. (no HUD is fine, low hp is not)

Re: Bash #108 - Are Mods Dead?

As someone who does not play mods, I know a quite a few of them. I didnt listen to the podcast, but what do they mean by dead for CoD? CoD4 had a ton of mods and a few were ported to CoD5 and a few new ones made as well.

Sitting back and thinking about this a moment, I could see why it would seem CoD mods are dead.

      1. CoD2 and later have been out for years and years. Plenty of mods that are established and that is pretty much it. People dont want to make something for an "older" game. Kinda like Battlefield.

      2. CoD4 and 5 came out quick. People are/were making mods for CoD4 then BAM 5 is out. Now BAM 6 is right here on us. Not a lot of time to grow that base of players that encourage a modding team to stick with it.

      3. People hate Treyarch for different reasons. Some modders refused to make a mod for CoD5 because of that. So you see a decline in modding for 5.

      4. Major bugs for the competitive community in CoD5. People making mods for competition dont bother because competitive leagues dump the game.

      5. Rank system. People want to rank up and prestige. Cant do that on a mod.

I think the major downside with CoD now is how quick they are releasing them. It keeps breaking up the community and causing people to wait for the next one over and over.

Also, I dont know how good the mod tools are for CoD. Maybe if they are not that great and not a lot of support, maybe thats killing it. I dont know though, seems like there are still a few good ones around. Also with as many options given on ranked servers, maybe people do not think a mod is needed.

      Anyway, thats what I think

Those are some good points so far. As long as the server is fast, my dl speed is insane and it takes not time for me to get mods, but I know for most, that can be a pain. I agree with some of your points also Crunch. I can see where the CoD game every year does hurt a modding community. People move on to fast and mods usually become more popular after a game has been out a while b/c people get bored.

Re: Bash #108 - Are Mods Dead?

I enjoy mods, but the main deterrent for playing mods in COD4 was that the game launched with a bug where it would wipe your stats if you played on a modded server. I know a couple of people who found this out the hard way, one was a new player who had never played mods before, who is now to worried to play on modded servers again. Also use to mostly play from work and it could take hours to download a mod over my connection.

I havn't found this to be true.. The only mod I play is Promod, and the servers I see and visit are never empty. :/

If anything, I think Promod is becoming more popular.
