I was completely expecting the blue spy to pop up behind the red one and stab him in the back using the new watch thingy that the spy will have to allow his body to fall down making him invisible.

That would have made it EPIC

so having never played TF2 or the original, is there a singleplayer story or is the game just multiplayer? This trailer makes me feel like im missing a good story.

No, it's just multiplayer, although it's two "companies" RED and BLU fighting each other and each one of the characters are different "characters" so to speak.

Both appear to be possibilities to me.

He was the BLU Scout because if he were using the dead ringer we'd see two scouts, the real one and the one the spy appears as.
