Awesome! Glad my subscription for that magazine is still active

*Edit* is that the same picture, or similar, as the box art that was released earlier?

And finally we see a higher-res version of that MW2 poster that surfaced a week or so ago. Now this looks good enough to possibly be the actual box art. I like it.

For those of you who get the magazine...do you know when it usually arrives/when it hits the shelves in stores?

Robert Bowling AKA FourZeroTwo has spoken.

"Subscribers of Game Informer will be getting their mailboxes hit with the first world-exclusive cover story for Modern Warfare 2 starting around May 15th (depending on where you live), with copies hitting retail stores anytime after that. The feature apparently is weighing in at around 10-ages. Having met with the writers for this piece personally, I know they’ve got plenty to show & tell. I can’t wait for these to start hitting readers as this is the best part of the job. To finally hear / see the first reaction to something the team has been putting so much work into for so long! I can’t wait to hear what you guys think when you read it and check out the first screenshots of the game.

May is a busy month and the hype machine is definitely in full effect. Cover story hitting mid-may, the first Gameplay trailer ever hitting May 24th and then E3 just around the corner the first week of June, I’m stoked. Can’t wait to FINALLY be shedding the shroud of secrecy and getting down to the good stuff!"

Looks like the first 5 pages have been scanned already and put up. The next 5 are expected later today/tonite.

                      Some quotes:

"It's about initial, massive impact," declares Infinity Ward president and CCO Jason West. Any one of the more than 12 million gamers who completed a tour in the company's previous game, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, can attest to the developer's skill in that arena.

On the surface, it seems that as our heroes assault the enemy base atop a frozen mountain, they're going to enter a firfight any FPS gamer would be familiar with. In fact, the way the mission plays out illustrates Infinity Ward's subtlety in crafting new experiences. MacTavish -- a playable character from the original Modern Warfare who now plays the role of grizzled NPC vet -- sends the player to rig up the encampment's fuel supply with explosives while he provides thermal vision overwatch.

Modern Warfare 2 promises to take players along for a ride as enthralling as any summer blockbuster. It continues the narrative begun in Modern Warfare, with the world facing dangerous political instability in Russia. Ruthless, amoral men are taking advantage of a strong nationalist bent in public opinion to secure the former superpower's deadly stockpile of weapons. Though radical warlord-turned-revolutionary Zakhaev is dead thanks to the heroics of Sgt. Price and company, the situation hasn't improved. The new face of global terrorism is a brutal former associate of Zakhaev named Makarov.

"You basically martyred Zakhaev in the last game," West notes. "He is using the fact that you killed Zakhaev as an excuse." Despite being a murderous sociopath with imperial ambitions, Makarov has secured a significant power base in Russia and is embarking on a plot to threaten global security.

Though IW isn't sharing the specifics of Makarov's plan, it's something deemed dangerous enough to convince the international community to dispatch the elite badasses of Task Force 141 to stop him. Even TF 141 might now understand the true nature of the threat. Infinity Ward is laying out the narrative from the perspective that real-world intelligence is imperfect; the CIA operative feeding you information isn't guaranteed to have accurate knowledge or the whole story. West states, "IT's not the game voice of God saying, "Here's the objectives and here's the situation."

                      ..

                      Additional elements

SP will have "customizable" weapons similar to the multiplayer component of COD4.
                      - this may only be enemy NPC's though

The ice mission, described above, shows exactly how "open-ended" the combat can be and how stealth can be implemented if the player chooses.

The gameplay may be "open-ended" but the story is "on-rails". No surprise there - all CoD stories are on rails.

Infinity Ward realized that the "invisible line" where enemies stop coming in COD4 was too abrupt. They have tried to eliminate that. They have also lengthened the single player past the 6-10 hour mark of COD4.
                      - this last point may be a misprint, as the article seems to suggest IW was happy with the overall length of the SP campaign in COD4...maybe the 2nd half of the article will help clarify

"Special Forces Mode" is a major part of MW2, a series of missions in the spirit of the Mile High Club from COD4. It will also have co-op in this mode! Gears-of-War-style bleed-out-and-partner-revive will be used. Looks like they have indeed copied CoD:WW's co-op code and rather than Nazi Zombies...replaced it with Special Forces Mode; however, apparently, co-op will not show up in the basic story.

Looks like SFM is similar to the Zombie mode in CoD:WW

Riot shields will be implemented in the game.

Snowmobiles are used as a form of escape during the recently released MW2 trailer. It is currently unknown whether players will interact with them in SP or MP.

Players will alternate using the two triggers to climb ice-walls.

Movable turrets will be used in SFM and in SP. It is unclear whether MP will have them.

IW wants to implement an accomplishment system to online, as they want to make their players famous. Undoubtedly this will be hacked within a day of the game reaching PC players.

For you console folks...online mode will use a "Live-Patching" system, where IW can manipulate spawn logic or certain parts of a multiplayer map without doing a full-blown patch.

Gameinformer was privy to a demo which showed a large desert setting where "Task Force 141" drops in and is told that it must navigate a "lengthy trek" to a fully-rendered valley with scattered caves.

As usual, the IW guys are frame-rate centric...this game will apparently run at 60 fps with nominal specs. What the hardware specs will be is currently unknown.

Only thing I hope that the game isn't gonna be more Gears of War-ish.

                              That's awesome thanks a lot!

"A live-patching system will be implemented for online multiplayer, forgoing the need for a downloadable patch."

Now, THIS is a really really good news, I hated how patches would split up the community and, hence, available servers, a new patch would be released, some people would update, some would stay and you'd get less servers and players either way.

Now, everyone will update automatically, so maximum number of servers/players will be available all the time.

Also more info on the MP part would be welcome, cause, frankly, who plays SP today? MP is what sells the game.

Graphically I don't think we'll see much of an upgrade, until the next generation of consoles, CoD is pretty much maxed out.
