Apple to Takeover Electronic Arts?

Let the rumor mill begin. There has been talks around the internet today of a possible takeover of Electronic Arts by none other than Apple. This rumor began when a recap of the show "Fast Money" was posted by David Tong over on the site The Street. Tong goes on to state what was said by CNBC's Guy Adami:

Adami noted that there is chatter that Apple (AAPL Quote) is eyeing Electronic Arts(ERTS Quote) as a takeover target.

Is there any truth to this takeover rumor? It's truly unknown at this point. Such a huge takeover would definitely swing some more of the gaming industry to Apple's favor though (the iPhone/iTouch would be getting some love). We will keep you posted on anything else that comes up in regards to this rumor.

I hope not - I really really hope not

I respect EA - although some of their games may slip a little from expectations and what they could have been, I still like EA.

I personally think if this was to ever happen there would be a severe drop in game quality because most likely they would force any game that was coming out from EA to be mac compatible.... damn mac users trying to work their way up the ladder that PC's have already climbed

It'll never happen. The only effect this may have is raise Apple share prices.

The only product that Apple makes that I like is the Ipod - I can't stand their computers, and don't really have any interest in their phones

Spawny, I don't think Alex was trolling. I totally agree with him and actually was him once. Pointing out that he doesn't hate Apple just not excited or interested in their product should be a revelation to him [Chaotic].

Regarding this rumor, I think it would be a bad move for Apple. They would have no ideal want to do with a developer/publisher like EA. EA's casual game initiative over the past year or so is what's probably attracting Apple to their rumored target, but that's not what EA is all about and I don't think they can sustain the existing titles EA supports online because they don't have any experience in that arena on the back end.

Conversely, the move could help EA as far as relief from past and future layoffs. Apple is a monster and if they are smart, and this does come to fruition, they would benefit by keeping all of EA intact and only reaping the benefits of what the hard workers at EA produce. Let them do their thing and all will be well. But, on the same token, Apple can let EA do their thing and only work with them to create games for their portable devices. I you want a development house, then find a 3rd party and pour some money into that, but this monstrosity of a company should let the other monstrosity be and all will be well.

That's just my take.

You can’t create yourself an impression that a stock is down, but you do it anyway because the SEC doesn’t understand it … Apple’s very important to spread the rumor that both Verizon and AT&T have decided they don’t like the phone … You also want to spread the rumor that it’s not going to be ready for Macworld. And this is very easy because the people who write about Apple want that story, and you can claim that it’s credible because you spoke to someone at Apple, ’cause Apple doesn’t … they’re not going to comment … So it’s really an ideal short. And again if I were short Apple, I’d pick up the phone and I’d do that today.

BF2142 was made for mac. also i think they got a few games for the iphone/touch

What are you talking about? There are tons of MAC games and games on the iTunes store all from EA and EA Mobile.

They've proven themselves to be good at doing business. They have a strong network curently developing and I've got to say that "I love my new iPhone 3G."

If they are interested in the Digital Publishing business and funding studios to do the development work, I'd say that would be a Win situation. Apple itself should not enter the gaming market. Focus on what you're strong at: Marketing, solid computing, and keeping your rabid fans/users happy.

I'm bi-platform (I've outed myself) and can PC or Macintosh compute plus a little UNIX, LINUX, etc. IMO most of those who don't like Macs have very specific and limited reasons for their dislike. Mostly, it's fear of the unknown. "I know how to get my PC to do almost anything, but every time I sit down at a Mac I feel lost..." That's because you are... These are simply machines which do work for us, take some time to master them and you won't be so biased and naive. FTW
