I don't like the COD4 box art that much. I think it could be a lot better. COD:WaW's box art is really nice though. Wish they would ditch the "One soldier" theme and go for maybe a picture of some action. Like the Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising cover. Now that attracts attention.

All the others were like that as well.

Whoa, never noticed that all three involve an allied soldier pointing towards the action until now.

Not so much that one is pointing towards any action, but one is pointing at the person holding the box and "Calling them to Duty." Basically saying, "Get your *** to the counter, buy this game, and help us out." Apparently it's worked so far, considering they're up to the sixth in the series coming out soon.

Yes and they're all still going pretty strong compared to a lot of games. Except for COD3 but that goes without saying.

Who can post the Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising box art? If you're going to put one soldier in, at least make it awesome like this game.

No need to flame as that was one of the most ignorant statements ever posted on this forum. Look into marketing some and see the millions, and now probably billions worldwide, that is spent on marketing. The amount of radio ads, tv commercials, signs, etc that you see throughout the day is insane and to have even an inkling of surviving, you must advertise and have a great looking product which involves the package. Also, some companies fight Wal-Mart so that their product can be at eye level, and that height depends on if something is in the kids' section or the area where adults shop. Not to mention the colors that are used also. Coca-Cola copyrighted their exact red color so no one else can use it. I'm a graphic designer in the RL and I can tell you, whether you realize it or not, marketing is almost everything. Unless you do not have the sense of vision or hearing, everything around you is trying to grab your attention, and it's on purpose whether you're aware of it or not.

Yep, directional lines are used a lot in design. Start looking for it on other things also. People on covers either look directly at you b/c it catches someone's eye when they're looked at directly or their eyes or arms will be pointing towards the title or other important info. It's done on purpose. A lot of designs purely start out with lines of how the reader will flow through the design with they look at it. The "Z" design and "bastard Z" are a couple of the most popular designs for reading material covers as they lead you to turn the page and start reading.

                  Actually, it does.

The box art helps to attract potential buyers. If the box art/cover is a flimsy disc case with a shoddy picture, people are less interested in buying it than if it's a plastic (or even metal) box with high end design on it. It may not be enough to get most customers to buy it on the spot, but it could spark their interest and they may research the game.

Think of it this way, which are you more interested in: a small car with rust and sun damage or a car with good body work and a nice paint job.

It's got a similar idea to the CoD4 cover imo.. Like, the smoke, foggy, greeny sh*t.

In the car example, I'd rather drive an ugly rust bucket that gets decent MPG and starts easily in the winter than a pretty car that slides around on icy roads and has no power.

I might be strange, but advertising usually has the opposite effect on me than what the marketers intend. I try to base decisions on function and merits of the product, not pretty boxes and ads.

There are plenty of establishments that I refuse to give my money, and some that I have NEVER visited, because their advertising was stupid. Sonic is a good example of this. Advertising that feels like the company is smirking and calling me an idiot makes me rage. Apple's advertising is even worse. "You're too stupid to use a PC, come on over to Mac because you have more money than brains." I never had a problem with Justin Long before those ads, now I would have to exercise serious restraint to avoid mutilating him if we were ever in the same room.

Re: Modern Warfare 2 Official Box Art?

Apparently a few people in this thread have no idea what the box-art is intended to do.

The game won't change based on the box-art. It is what it is.

The box art is intended to draw the eye of people browsing games in the store. The only job the front of the box has is to make you turn the box over and read the back.

It doesn't change the game at all.

Regarding the car analogy. If 2 cars were exactly the same except one looked like crap and the other didn't, you would be a liar to say you wanted the crappy car.

However I do agree with the ethos of not buying from companies that advertise by hoping you are dumb. Like the guy sitting at the desk who seems surprised to see the camera walk in. "Oh Hi! I'm troy and I'd like to talk to you about such and such."

QFT. Microsoft does some bad stuff with its power, but those Mac ads might as well be political campaign commercials.

Not strange, you're smarter than the advertisers hope. I'm glad I got to learn a lot about what goes on behind designs and advertising as my 'eyes are open' and I don't succomb to any of them. I get tempted sometimes, but realize the tricks that I also use. Sadly, most people do actually fall for them. But yes, actually buying something b/c of it's quality is much more important. Telling most people, "Shiny, bright, pretty, cool, everyone else has it" is enough to sell it to them.

For this part, it depends on the price. You're talking to a guy who still drives a '94 GMC Safari, because it has never failed to start and does what I need it to do. And it just so happens to be paid off.
If there are two identical cars, but one is trashy-looking and the other is pretty but costs $2000 more, I'm picking the beater. I really don't buy into the idea that your car or clothes define who you are. I'm not sure I even feel embarrassment anymore. I'm hurtling towards 30 and just don't care about things like that.

And if I go to a store to buy a game, I already know which game I plan on buying. I've already read reviews and played demos or betas (most of the time) and know at least if it's the type of game I might like. I've been buying a lot of games on Steam lately, so I haven't even been seeing traditional box art. I suppose the casual shopper who has $50 to throw away might take a chance on a game based on how pretty the painting looks on the front, but not me.

I guess I'm just not part of a target demographic. I'm sure there are people conducting polls and analyzing data to try and stick me in one, though. "Oh, the lucrative angry-20-something-cynical-vet market. An untapped goldmine to leverage (rape)." :shakehead:

I do have a little bit of experience in marketing, I suppose. I was in recruiting for a short time and sold expensive vacuum cleaners for a much shorter period of time. In both cases I had trouble lying to people and screwing them out of their lives or money, so I was only average. It's the people with no consciences that can prosper in those situations, sadly.

Not real. The 2 is a thin yellow (like in the trailer) so there is not enough difference when viewing this box from far away. People will assume it's the original COD4 (especially if they have never played the original) and pass on it. The text is also too small to read from far away.

It's just a quick photoshop job to get people interested. First store that get's their "box art" leaked on the internet gets extra coverage!

Actually, you are still affected on steam. The pictures of the games on the main page draw your interest in. You may not buy it based on a pretty picture, but it peaks your interest enough to look through and see what it's about, if there is a demo, etc.

Even if you don't look at any pictures and don't like to "scrounge around" for new games. When I mention "Modern Warfare 2", what's the first thing that comes to mind? COD4! You interested is based on the previous sequels. Hell, you might actually have made your mind up to purchase a game based on the title itself. That's why you always see sequels or similar titles (Bioshock 2, Operation Flashpoint 2, GTA series, Sims series). Operation Flashpoint 2 is not very similar to the original Flashpoint game, but just hearing the "2" will make your mind wander back to those feelings when playing the original and make you more interested in buying it/avoiding it.
