I prefer just 1v1 in BF2 anyway, so this doesn't not sound bad. Oh well.

Let everyone think that it will be 24 players, then when you announce that it will be 40 people are happy and forget that it's a step back from 64 players and big maps and full-on combined arms.
Yep, this is exactly whats happening. I predict that the next generation of battlefield games will have another new feature and they'll lower that number even more. We'll just blame it on our rigs and the clusterf**k and accept something like 32 player max. Remember, they're building the maps around 40 players so expect a clusterf***k.

I can't believe i'm hearing that 40 is good enough, thats why bf2 was so scalable, i want the option to have 64+ players. If people want 40 then they can always set that limit. Bigger maps, larger scale battles on more fronts, and more players was suppose to be the future, not this.

Perhaps they do, but there should be a choice.

Those who want to put their systems/servers to the limit shouldn't be restricted by those who can't, just as the latter have the choice to play on low populated servers.

Similar to how BF2 was setup with 16, 32, 64 layer maps, except more.

Because I am studying computer systems and business at one of the best Computing Universities in the UK. I also have a great interest in the IT hardware market, i've done a little work for MyIS in the past and learned a few specifics from Tim and Dan. I've also managed co-admin'd a number of servers on different games such as BF2, CoD4 and CS:S.

So, in short, I know that using the Frostbite engine and adding 128 players to a game would require a very, very high end server which would be simply too expensive for a GSP to purchase and run.

Do you not remember to huge amounts of lag on 64 player servers when BF2 first came out?

40 is fine, not to big, not too small.

Atleast give us the choice, we can run those 128 on private LAN. I know, I know, where are we gonna find 128 players; if you build it, they will come.

Imagine the lag and spikes on 128 servers:laugh:

64 seems fine but i dont think the engine and servers speeds could handle 128 smoothly:salute:

having said this it is a big step backwards to 40 but the maps are not epic 42 size?:shakehead:

Re: Bad Company 2 - 40 Players Confirmed

Having ~128 players on a map designed for 40 would get silly, but if DICE releases a SDK then the community can make appropriate maps.

There has been a petition raised for BF2 requesting that it's 64 player cap be unlocked so mods like Project Reality (which has playable 4x4km maps and 1 8x8km test map) can benefit. Some people opposed it thinking that an increase in capacity would mean they'd have to play on spammy 100 player vanilla karkand servers, ignoring the fact it'd be optional.

You probably have more networking and server administration knowledge/experience then most of us, however you don't work at DICE and have intricate knowledge of the frostbite engine's capabilities.

Not that I do, just saying why I question the credibility of your statement.

Either way, I'd prefer to have the option to max the capability. If the server crashes then so be it, I presume if it was unlocked we'd at least get more then 40 out of it.

But the thing is, if they provided such an ability and it did just cause server crashes, the number of people who would go on their website and complain of "crap coding", "DIcE can't even make a game", "EA suX" and all the other immature comments would be huge.

Also, there was quite a lot of destructibility in BC1, so there is going to have to be some attention to how strenuous that is on the network.
