Frostbite Engine is DirectX 11 Ready

According to an article from PC Games Hardware, DICE's flagship Frostbite engine is now compatible with the not-yet-released DirectX 11. Apparently, it took them just 3 hours to add DX11 support. Three precious hours that could've been spent on the BF2 patch instead, right guys? Kidding.
Johan Anderson, Rendering Architect at DICE, revealed some details about the Frostbite Engine, which is the base for the Battlefield games.

At the beginning of the porting progress the developer had to face a cross platform engine (PC, Xbox 360, PS3) with an exclusive DirectX 10 rendering path that had DX 10.0 and DX 10.1 features. The actual port of the Engine from DirectX 10 to DirectX 11 was done in three hours said Anderson. Searching and replacing the relevant parts inside the code required the most time.

Since currently there is no DirectX 11 hardware or appropriate development software, the Frostbite Engine was equipped with a switch inside the compiler that can be changed to DirectX 10 or DirectX 11. The developers at DICE are certain that the CPU load during API calls can be reduced noticeably with DirectX 11 drivers. Among other things the Frostbite DirectX 11 Engine offers HDR texture compression, Compute Shader and hardware tessellation for characters and terrain.

With Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 1943 there are two more games of the Battlefield series are based on the Frostbite Engine.
You can check out the article here. One interesting question this raises is whether Frostbite is still supported for those who are sticking with Windows XP and DirectX 9. Anyone have any info about that?

DX11 hmmm, I suppose it'll only work if you buy a new wiz bang graphics card too.

Don't forget to pony up for the latest OS, too...

At first I thought it was silly to think that the Frostbite engine wouldn't support DX9, but then I remembered all the fuss when Battlefield 2 came out and it was a DX9 and above game only and all those DX8 card owners were out of luck. Maybe it's good question after all.

If it's cross-platform and runs on current consoles, it can run on DX9.

I wonder if DX11 is going to be a Micro$oft Windows 7 exclusive.

I'm still disappointed that those stupid ****s at Microsoft made DX10 Vista only, at least originally. Basically forced upgrading...really know how to treat your customer base well, try to squeeze every dime out of them at every opportunity.

DX11 will run under Vista but you will still need a new GFX card to run it.

The Geforce GT300 chipset is DX11 and rumoured to be released around the end of the year.

Really no reason to upgrade to DX10 Vista right now... However - when Windows 7 comes out with DX11 (Supposedly) Then I will gladly upgrade. Although I'm wondering how long my 9800 will last.

that should be a real hint as to how much smoke and mirrors DX11 will be.......it's just another Microsoft sales tool to help their slumping vista sales and these developers are just getting suckered in too....reminds me of a snake oil salesman.....

Well that's me happy , I have been hoping for months that BC2 would be DX10, but DX11 is even better

                      lol, unwise person is unwise.

Firstly, DX11 is primarily Win7 based, not Vista

Secondly, as you'll undoubtebly know, DX11 uses 95% of DX10 technology, but instead makes implementation and usability a lot easier. So, all that is really required to port such a technology is a little work on changing some pre-built code.

They are not having to implement a lot of new code, merely change what is already there and existing.

                        .
DX11 will be released for Vista. It's not 'primarily' for Windows 7 in the same way DX8 and DX9 worked fine on Windows XP.

By primarily I mean it's being developed on and for Windows 7, but yes, it will work on Vista.

Youd hope it'd work on Vista, seeing as Windows 7 is in effect the next Vista SP + facelift. Definately be getting Win 7 64bit though, XP is getting on a bit now, especially 32 bit and the program/memory limitations.

For those of us with the Win7 Beta, we already have DX11 :awes

Too bad there is no hardware or software for it yet
