    BFHQ.se Previews Battlefield 1943

As you saw from their pictures a few days ago, the BFHQ.se team visited DICE to check out Battlefield 1943 and ask DICE some questions.

On the 30th of March 2009 we on BFHQ.se got the chance to visit the DICE-office, to test the recently announced Battlefield 1943. An eight-man strong crew (left to right on the photo: Lezziter, JaZzE, SharkBaiT, Phantomen, KaMi, KiWi, FeteTony and the designer of BFHQ.se Manche) were selected to go to DICE. There we were met by Patrick Liu and Gustav Halling, who showed us around the office and gave each person their own Bad Company-style hand grenade, then showed us to the game-room where the test would take place. Five of the eight who participated have written down their thoughts, experiences and opinions from the test and now you all have a chance to read them.

We would also like to direct a special thank you from all of us who were there to the team at DICE. Thank you very much!
    Read the team members' impressions...

At the end of the article, they wrote up a few things that they learned about BF1943 from the interview.
    • Punkbuster or similar anti-cheat software will be released for the PC-version. What and how it will work is yet to be seen.
    • The patches for BF2 and BF2142 are making progress. We can expect more information and a beta during April.
    • The financial crisis has not affected DICE much. They have noticed somewhat of a drop in sales, but no employees have been fired due to the crisis. Mirror's edge sold less than expected.
    • There are no plans of releasing a mod or map editing-tool for BF1943.
    • At the most, 15 people have been involved in the production of BF1943. In the beginning, there was only Patrick, Gustav and one more guy.
    • The units in BF1943 do not look like those in Battlefield Heroes, that misconception might have cone from the first cartoonish trailer that was released.
    • The maximum amount of players for the PC-version is yet to be decided. There is nothing that says it has to be 24.
You can check out the full 7-page article with impressions from each BFHQ.se team member here.

Depending on how it works on PC with rendering the higher graphics settings, this could be very welcome news:

There is lots of vegetation, which means that you have lot of places to hide behind. Luckily with the new engine, you don’t have to worry over getting spotted over long distances since Frostbite rendrers the necessary vegetation far away.

looks like they're listening to the community.:yay:

although it will be weird if they fit a lot of players on maps made for 24 players. i wonder if they will scale the maps.

If they allowed the community to make their own maps for the game they couldn't sell DLC add-ons.

              where's the fun in that?

things that would most likely keep me from wanting to buy the game, lack of dedicated servers with proper server browser support, if they use hosted game matching service through Windows Live then forget it.

lack of proper widescreen support, especially if they leave it the same as consoles with zoomed in field of view. :dead:

Pretty sure they've already said there wouldn't be bigger maps for the PC version, so being able to cram more players onto maps designed for smaller numbers isn't that great of an idea, playing CoD 4 is a good example of how bad a game plays with too many people on maps not designed to handle greater numbers.

I don't think they've either confirmed or denied anything about map sizes on PC, from what I've read and from vids I've watched.

                      Very nice to hear.

Another thing unlimited ammo/health. Make option for server creator to choose unlimited ammo/health or alternatively original BF 1942 ammo/health boxes around maps. That's not too much work for your small team, but makes many battlefield veterans happy. Please consider this option! :)

Nothing can be as bad as Shipment, even with 4 players the map is to small:salute:

Wake is a good sized map that could loose a bit.

This is a big one for me. If the fov is locked to 65, like many console games, I'll end up fighting motion sickness. COD WaW single player was the first game I've played that locked the fov to 65, and it was unplayable for me on my widescreen monitor. MP was ok, as I was able to change the fov to 80. They cheat-protected that command in SP, though...

In any case, I'll be waiting a while after it comes out to see.

Maybe if DICE had persuaded EA not to put DRM install limits (you can only install 3 times then it's a coaster) it might have sold better.

I hope they wise up for BF1943 and Bad Company 2 on the PC.

Right before you uninstall, all you have to click the program in start menu (same area as Mirror's Edge, in mine it's right above the one to run the game) called "Deactivate Mirror's Edge". Then you will get your install back.

And, for your reference, ME comes with 5 (not 3) activations.
Okay, I was wrong about that. But it's still a problem because there's so many forms of implementing DRM, number of install limits, ability to deactivate or not, procedures needed to deactivate etc that it causes immediate reaction to not want to buy the game.
