    Editorial: Thinking about Total Battlefield

Five months ago, Spawndemon put his arm around my shoulders, pointed towards Total Battlefield, and said "Someday this will all be yours. Well, actually it's yours now. Have fun; try not to break anything." As I looked deep into his eyes, I could see that they had been jaded by the responsibility of running Total Battlefield in all its iterations for all these years. I swore to myself that I would carry on the legacy of the great men who served this post before me.

I was one of the nearly 1,000 people who crowded the Total Battlefield 2 TeamSpeak back in June 2005 with Rico, Laike, GameWizard, and the other forefathers of TBF2. We sat patiently and listened as they scoured the web for news about the upcoming Battlefield 2 demo and answered our questions on the IRC channel. I played Desert Combat with a friend to pass the time and speculated about BF2. We knew it would be awesome, but how awesome?

Four years later, new and old Battlefield fans have patiently waited for DICE to announce the next big thing. My tenure at Total Battlefield was rather quiet at first with Battlefield 2 showing its age and mod updates slowing. Many of us were looking into the future, hopeful that soon Battlefield 3 would bring back the magic of excitedly analyzing screenshots and counting down the days to the demo. Instead, we got Battlefield 1943 and Bad Company 2. The outcry from the PC gamers on Total Battlefield was loud indeed. Had they abandoned us? Granted, both games will be available on PC, but we know they're not the true Battlefield we are waiting for. We still have that glimmer of hope that somewhere, deep in the DICE offices behind several locked doors, a team of developers works feverishly on the next Battlefield game for us, with the Battlefield 1942 theme looping in the background and footage of Battlefield 2 gameplay being shown on huge monitors to serve as inspiration for the greatness in the making.<!--more-->

It's fun to dream, but let's get back to the present. I know many of you are fed up with those "other" Battlefield games. But they follow the same basic Battlefield formula and share the Battlefield name with our beloved BF2, so Total Battlefield will report about them. I've said this before - try to stay on-topic in the BFH, BF1943, and BFBC2 news threads. Yes, it stinks that DICE is focusing on the "casual" market. No, EXCESSIVE CAPS and ***terisks will not make them cancel Battlefield Heroes. And don't get me started on The List. Leave the news threads to the people who are interested in the games they report on. If you're looking at BF1943 screenshots and you have issues with the color scheme, by all means, voice them - we saw that DICE listened and brought the saturation down. However, if you're just generally angry about the lack of BF3, keep your mouse away from that Post Reply button. Now don't get me wrong, we're not going to silence your dissenting opinions. As long as you're not personally attacking anyone, you're free to complain about anything. Just...try not to be stupid.

I hope you guys have enjoyed my five months of Battlefield news reporting. There have been a few occasions where I blanked out and missed a few things, but Spawndemon, Zips, and Alex have been quick to keep the news rolling and get me back in the director's seat. We made a few changes to the site, most notably the new homepage design that focuses on the news more and hopefully makes them easier to read. We've started posting editorials from Total Gaming Network admins and forum members that explain their opinions on the direction of the Battlefield franchise. I'd love to see more by members - troybob did an excellent job and his series was received very well. We're always open to news and editorial submissions. Post them in the News Submissions forum and feel free to PM me if you get that nagging feeling that I missed or ignored your submission.

In May, I'm heading over to Stockholm to visit the DICE offices and conduct some interviews to get more info on the upcoming Battlefield games for you guys. This is my first real foray into gaming journalism, and I hope to represent the interests of us core Battlefield fans while keeping an open mind when checking out what DICE is working on. I'm a bit of a closet Bad Company fan, so I don't vehemently oppose the new console Battlefield games like some members. However, you know I'm a BF2 modder first and foremost, so of course I'll be digging for info about the PC versions and the moddability of Frostbite. Don't take this as a promise though, you know how strict EA can be with info. At the very least, I'll get some cool pictures and help them compile the BF2 1.5 patch installer. If someone knows how to code a thumbdrive-contained trojan that fixes the J-10 hitbox issues, PM me.

Let's get down to the point - what makes Total Battlefield so awesome is you, the user. Without your constant input and participation, this site would have fizzled out long ago like many sites before it. Since its humble beginnings so long ago, it has expanded into the Total Gaming Network, covering the broad spectrum of gaming news on all different platforms. However, we all know deep down inside that Total Battlefield is the TGN site, the place where it all started. So, I'd like to ask you what you think of the job I've done so far as the director of Total Battlefield. Where do you see Total Battlefield heading in the next year? What could we do differently to improve your experience on the site?

I remember Ranking up to sergeant back then where it was an impossible rank to get.

We need to send an army of mooses to get battlefield 3 out of Dice's hands

Spawndemon must be a tall guy... I mean put his arm around your shoulder?! 0.o

Also, The moose should post POTD more POTD than POTM :P
But I guess people should give the moose the pictures first ^^

Rly, if you ever want to quit elky, I can take your spot :P

      You doing good :)

I'm farely new to these forums so I wouldn't know. It seems that you are doing a good job. I like this site because everything is accesible and easy to use. I would suggest Total Gaming to review more about the BF series but in your own words not from others. Also have you guys interview DICE more often, stuff like that.

You've been doing a great job Elxx. Ever since I started playing BF2, I have always made time to check TBF2 for news and updates and have continued to be satisfied with it's success. I really find it amazing how well you have fit into the almighty Spawndemon's shoes. Have a great time in Sweden and tell us some good news.

i banned rico for spamming the pbf DC forums about his new "total bf" website.

it was a temp ban though.

O wow, I still remember that TeamSpeak server...there were so many people! I know this is my first post in probably over a year, but I'd like to say thanks to everyone for making this place special. I wish you the best of luck Elxx; I've always loved the Sir. community and I'm happy to see one of you represent this site.

Heh, you got caught up in the great merge of 2008!

This is why I love this site, the users! I haven't been to any other forum where everyone else seems as relaxed and fun and at times, it makes for great reading in the forums :)

Elxx and Spawn are doing a great job. I am still amazed Spawn manages to do the amount of work he does on TBF2 despite being at Uni!

                          Anyway, long live TGN!
