Filefront Closes Due to Economy

That is right, the major site for downloading many files, Filefront, will be closing its doors on March 30th, 2009. Read Filefront's official message below:

We regret to inform you that due to the current economic conditions we are forced to indefinitely suspend the FileFront site operations on March 30, 2009. If you have uploaded files, images or posted blogs, or if you would like to download some of your favorite files, please take this opportunity to download them before March 30th when the site will be suspended.

We would like to give a warm thank you to all of you who have been part of the FileFront communities we have built together. Your support has had a meaningful impact for all of us here at FileFront. Again, we want to give you a sincere “thank you” for your support over the years and wish you all the very best.

If you have certain files on there, be sure to get them before that time; however, we are adding more and more downloads daily here at TGN. Be sure to check our download sections to get the files you need for the future.

I was bummed when I read about this. Filefront has been great over the yrs...often having very fast downloads for large files like maps/mods/demos/etc, and without the pain-in-the-butt registration/login that other sites made people use.

Sad day.

Yep, they almost always had the fastest downloads without the waiting in line crap.

which ultimately led to their demise..... or at least part of it
thats alot of bandwith that someone has to pay for :salute:

as small as TGF is.... it was costing us well over 2k a month to run... i can imagine what filefront was paying

Modders, mappers and gamers alike loved Filefront as a no-hassle place to download their patches, fave mod, map or frag movie.

Sadly, in what was a somewhat inevitable conclusion that could be traced back Ziff Davis' Chapter 11 filing and eventual divestiture of 1UP to Hearst Corporation's UGO Entertainment early this year. Though Hearst picked up the aforementioned 1UP.com and Mycheats.com, Gametab.com and GameVideos.com from Ziff Davis, they appear to have declined Filefront.com and it's nearly 100 Terabytes worth of data storage capability.

Consistently in the top 1000 (source: Alexa) most visited sites on the net.

This is part of the post made at BigBangGamers forums by Cheeseman (an admin at FileFront) - thanks to Lun@tic Fringe for the info:

At it's close, FileFront will remove a total of over 1.5 million files (that's over 48TB of space--yes, TERABYTES). At it's height, in 2007, we had 25,397 members on at one time (out of 645,149 registered, that's nearly 1/24th of all it's members). The head admins of the site were just notified YESTERDAY that it's going under and they had absolutely NO time to get word out. It came as a complete shock.

Some of us are going to try and bring it back, but it doesn't look very promising.

Are the other "files network" sites going down too? I noticed on codfiles.com (cod.filefront.com) that the CoD4 section was 'deleted by an admin' and they posted up saying they weren't sure what was going on...

jaa all of it is going down....anything that used filefront for downloads is kaput.....codfiles, GTA files and the like are all gonna get their files gone........if they act fast they can get all of thier files on a hard disk so then they can upload them onto another site, but until that time they are SOL

Very sad, I've regularly used that valuble service many times of the years. As others have stated, another service will rise to fill the void left by the demize of Filefront.

I am interested that it is the collapse of the magazine/publishing industry seems to be the real impetus for this action...

I was getting rather tired of my frequently downloaded files being purged while the ancient unused ones seemd to stay around forever. Oh well, we won't have to worry about that stuff anymore.

I think a website that incorporates bit-torrent files would be good... have the servers set to seed all files, then when more people connect to download the files you'll get faster speeds for everyone... and of course the website would control the files so it'd only host mods/maps/patchs for games - "no illegal stuff" etc.

That'd save money on having to have hundreds of servers to keep speeds up... and pretty much everyone has a Bit-Torrent client, although it would be awesome if Firefox or Chrome incorporated Bit-Torrent style downloads inside the browser? Like you just click 'download' and if it was a .torrent it'd download it inside the browser but it'll also be uploading while you browse - of course it'd have settings so you could limit how much you're max upload speed is / max connections etc.

Filecloud will be permanently shutting down on March 31st, 2009.

We have already turned off credit card charging and canceled all PayPal subscriptions, so the next two months are free for all of you. If you pay via PayPal then please login to your PayPal account next week to make sure the Filecloud subscription was canceled. If it was not then please cancel it manually. Your account will remain Premium while the site stays operational.

Filecloud will continue to operate as is in the interim. Free accounts can be created, but Premium subscriptions are no longer offered. No files will be available as of April, so download them now if you don't already have local copies.
