    GDC: OnLive Revealed - The Future of Gaming


    A new on-demand gaming service has been unveiled at this year's Game Developers Conference that could usher in the future of gaming. Here's a portion of the article posted over on IGN discussing this new service:
    Before I dive into what OnLive is and how it works, let me start by saying that you should read every word of this article as this service has the potential to completely change the way games are played. If it works and gets proper support from both publishers and gamers, you may never need a high-end PC to play the latest games, or perhaps even ever buy a console again. That is not an exaggeration.

    Just announced at this year's GDC, OnLive is an on-demand gaming service. It's essentially the gaming version of cloud computing - everything is computed, rendered and housed online. In its simplest description, your controller inputs are uploaded, a high-end server takes your inputs and plays the game, and then a video stream of the output is sent back to your computer. Think of it as something like Youtube or Hulu for games.

    The service works with pretty much any Windows or Mac machine as a small browser plug-in. Optionally, you will also be able to purchase a small device, called the OnLive MicroConsole, that you can hook directly into your TV via HDMI, though if your computer supports video output to your TV, you can just do it that way instead. Of course, you can also just play on your computer's display if you don't want to pipe it out to your living room set.

    When you load up the service and choose a game to play (I'll come back to the service's out-of-games features in a bit), it starts immediately. The game is housed and played on one of OnLive's servers, so there's never anything to download. Using an appropriate input device, be it a controller or mouse and keyboard, you'll then play the game as you would if it were installed on your local machine. Your inputs are read by the plugin (or the standalone device if you choose to go that route) and uploaded to the server. The server then plays the game just like it would if you were sitting at the machine, except that instead of outputting the video to a display, it gets compressed and streamed to your computer where you can see the action. Rinse and repeat 60 times per second.

      This + 3d TV = win...

      This looks like it's gonna be great and will definetly change the future of gaming... but will it be fast enough for FPS games? FPS games like CoD4 where you need to keep a high constant fps, if it can stream fast enough and compress the images then gamers hopefully won't notice any lag.

      Either way, it'd be great being able to play any game without 'purchasing' the game since you basically 'stream it from OnLine'

          I think this has some interesting possibilities and real potential...but the proof in the pudding will be if the technology will be fast/smooth enough to play (ie. all that data bouncing back and forth quickly enough) and how/if enough servers will be made available to play on. I could also see competing interfaces from different companies both being a good thing, or something that would bog this idea down. One would also have to think how this will affect cheating online...will it help stop it as it operates now, but open up new avenues and put users more at risk because of all the data transfer? And how will video card makers react?

          Lots to think about. Will be cool to see how this develops over time. Sounds good on paper, but the devil will be in the details.

                  I doubt it. Not because they cant generate the images fast enough, but because I see no way that they can prevent input lag.

                  In most FPS games your local client will react instantly to your input, and then sync up with the server afterwards. That is possible since your client generates the graphics.

                  But if the the graphics is handled serverside each movement of the mouse will have to be sent to the server, appropriate graphics generated and then sent back to you.
                  It doesn't take much latency to make that a very frustrating experience.

                    This is the nutshell of why it'll never work.
                    I was a network engineer in a past life, working on systems that couldn't tolerate much latency (SCADA) while those are sometimes live and die situations (gas lines, water systems, flood gates) and much more important than gaming, we couldn't make these things work properly across the internet and each system had to be self-contained.

                    the internet is also not smooth. ping spikes are bad enough when the game is local. When the entire game is online its going to be much much worse.
                    The massive amounts of bandwidth are unacceptable. Someone calculated like 50 GB/h for top level video. There goes your comcast limit after 1 hour of video gaming..it'll be okay.. after 3 or 4 years you can finally work your way through call of duty...
