Mikael Hedberg, a software engineer at DICE, has made some waves around the Battlefield community in the past couple of days. A post on his blog from Saturday describes his reaction to a new DICE game that he saw during a company meeting. He also comments on some of the community reactions to the recent Battlefield 1943 and Bad Company 2 announcements.
As you can guess, this kicked off a lot of new rumors about Battlefield 3 and the like. Today, Mikael responded with another post that also answered a few questions that people had about the state of the Battlefield community.
If you're a Battlefield fan, I strongly recommend that you read both posts as they give a good insight into DICE's reactions to the angry comments that floated around the community after BF1943 and BFBC2 were announced. Check out the rest of Mikael's blog as well.
We had one of our monthly whole company meetings (well, DICE, not all of EA) yesterday. Usually, those meetings are mildly boring like such meetings can be — economic reports, some announcements, some presentations of projects that tends to be stuff you already know. Interesting, but hardly exciting. Last month there was a post mortem presentation for Mirror’s Edge, which was pretty cool since I haven’t worked very closely with the ME guys.
But this time there was a presentation of the state of one of our projects that has been running for quite a while now, but has never really seemed to be going anywhere in particular to me as an outside observer. It’s been somewhat worrying, to tell the truth.
Anyway, the presentation they held yesterday on the meeting, and a demo they arranged afterwards compeltely blew me away. They’ve locked down a perfect concept and created something incredibly impressive to demo it, and I just wish I could tell you the details (which, of course, I can’t).

“Never trust rumors”, they say. One thing that the internet has certainly done is increase the speed at which rumors move.
In my last post I mentioned an unannounced project, that Patrick Liu and Ben Cousins have also mentioned before. I added that it looked awesome, and that was about as much as I said — a sort of longer version of my tweet about it. Most of the post was about impressions and communications with the fans.
The reaction was a bit wider than I’d expected, to say the least, and I must say I learned a lot from that feedback, that can hopefully help me make the game I work on even better.
That said, the post also sparked an avalanche of speculations, which is fine. I even consider it kind of funny to read all the guesses and assumptions and marvel at how wrong they can be. Let’s face it, if I’d described my impressions of Mirror’s Edge the first time I saw it in equally vague terms, most of the guesses would have been the same, wouldn’t they? Good comedy, anyway, for those of us who know the truth.
But somewhere along the way, these speculations got attributed to me. I read stuff like that “Mikael Hedberg unofficially announced…” and a certain game title. Whoa, hold on a second!
