      Have fun Console owners.

I hope it's coming for free on PC. I'd hate to have to use Windows Live just to buy it.

I just gotta say its kinda funny coming from the BF side to the CoD side how "strange" it seems that the idea of a map pack costing money to PC users.

In Battlefield its kinda expected. In the early 1942 days it wasnt and I suppose the last patches gave some free stuff.

That is one thing I like about CoD and the PC community because in the BF community that always put a wedge in it and the expansion packs would die a slow horrible death as people dropped them to play the vanilla game instead.

To access XBL (Xbox Live) to play online costs about $5/month if you buy it 1 year at at time. There is no charge, as far as I know, to access PSN (PlayStation Network).

$10 for 4 maps is a pretty good deal, $2.50/map. Free is always better of course, but that's what Xbox and PlayStation have online stores for. It is a business after all, and they have to generate revenue.

And let's not forget that creating and testing this new content costs money. Activision/Treyarch/IW have to pay artists, developers, and testers, and it costs Microsoft and Sony money to distribute that content. It's not unreasonable at all to expect them to get compensation for the items they're providing. Getting everything for free just isn't realistic, although we'd all like it that way.

The only real downside, IMO, is that when you offer up stuff like this, it can split the community because not everyone will buy it. I think a better way would be to plan for content ahead of time, and increase the price of the game by $5-10 dollars, then provide all DLC in the future for free. This keeps everyone in the community on the same page, but is obviously less attractive when buying the game up-front.

So any way you slice it, there's a downside.

I'm not going to knock anyone who wants to get paid for their product or service. It's just in the pc world there always has been free content. I hope it stays that way.

I think it'll have to eventually change. Those expectations of free stuff were from days gone by, when the business model/economics of the situation were different. I think us PC users have a bit of a sense of entitlement from those earlier days, which makes us look cheap/spoiled.

But for PC, the challenge is how to distribute content for a price, without it getting pirated. Not easy, especially if you don't already have an extensive system like Steam already in place.

For PC, again I think the easiest way to do it is to raise the price upfront...PC games are about $50 in North America right now, so I'd bump them up to $60 (which is what Consoles pay right now) if future content is planned, then push out the content to everyone as a simple patch.

We all want "free", but I just don't think it's realistic any more.

Now as a graphic designer, I believe in the artists getting their cut. :p But, I want to know after M$ and PS take their cut, how much actually goes back to Treyarch? Obviously, they'll get something, they better.

As a PC gamer though, bring me my free stuff! As said above, expansion packs, map packs, etc can split communities up and in the end instead of boosting your game as a developer, you helped speed up its death for many gamers.

My thinking is that game makers really dont care how much you play a game, how long you play it or if you ever play it. It's business and all that matters is that you buy it when it comes out. they probably make more money if you dont play it, that way they dont have to deal with many patches and things like free content. I believe they could care less about splitting communities up with DLC. As long as you or most people buy it , thats good business. Remember product support costs lotsa mullah!

I won't ever pay more than $30 for a piece of code, a disk, and a plastic case. I would prefer a lower price up front and then just hack the community away later. If a group wants to play the $2.50 map, let them. It would have to be damn good to make me want it.

Also, Halo has done pretty well in the past charging for map packs. After a few months, they converted them to free, mandatory updates to reunite the community and turn a profit. I actually paid for one of the Halo DLC's... Even if you hate that franchise, it is a hell of a business model.

While I somewhat agree that they make moola at the beginning when a game sales, IF you are trying to make a successful game series, things need to be thought of differently b/c gamers who are pissed, will not buy your future product of the same name. CoD has been pretty good at decent support and some free content along the way. You may disagree, but I will you give you the exact opposite of the path the CoD series has taken.

That opposite side would be EA and the Medal of Honor series. How I love MoHAA and MoHSH, but they got the attitude of 'no support,' 'no free content' and 'just making money off the initial sales' and hence MoH:Stillborne was produced as Rudedog would say aka MoH:Airborne. Great sp, horrible mp code, no dedicated servers, complete crap. I was playing that game online when it first came out and there was only like 250 ppl online...

Gamers do care about some of that other stuff. People seem to be quite happy with Valve and willing to buy their next product each time it comes out. Maybe that has to do with game updates out the wazoo.
