  • Looking at the Future of Battlefield

The second entry in the five part series on the announcement of Battlefield 1943 and Bad Company 2 and the newest editorial From the Editors' Desks, "Looking at the Future of Battlefield" examines the sweeping changes from the traditional Battlefield titles of the past and why the community should embrace these changes with an open mind:

Did anyone play a C&C or Unreal game lately? No - Why? Because they’ve continued to stay the same! Updated graphics and then what, Gameplay we got bored of 10 years ago? The Battlefield games have always been very entertaining and the game style really is a great concept. But, if they were to make just another Battlefield 2 with updated graphics, a few more communication options and new guns, wouldn’t you get completely bored? I would.

DICE dared to try something new and immediately they get bashed by the community. Of course there are some people who are looking forward to Battlefield 1943 but no one signs up on a forum simply to praise a game. Infinite ammo, 24 players, 3 maps, it all sounds very different to what we’re used to, but that’s a good thing! DICE have yet to release a bad game, and I seriously doubt they suddenly decided to do so now. The Battlefield series, just like everything else, needs change.

Bethesda was completely slaughtered by the Fallout community when they announced they were making Fallout 3. People didn’t want them to touch their favorite game series and decided to hate the game before they had even seen anything of it; one angry Fallout fan even threw a rock through the window to Bethesda’s office. Not very encouraging for the developers, but Bethesda still managed to create an amazing game that proved all the naysayers wrong.

What says DICE couldn’t do a great job on 1943? The last times they tried something new it went well. Mirrors Edge and Battlefield: Bad Company turned out to be innovative, new designs, and Battlefield Heroes appears like it will extend the Battlefield franchise in a new and exciting direction. Let them be creative and try new things; wait and see instead of just ranting away about a game you’ve only seen a teaser and a few screenshots from. The latest C&C games are borderline retro now; the gameplay hasn’t changed in 10 years. I’m glad DICE isn’t going to let that happen to the Battlefield series: It’s time for Battlefield to move forward in a different direction, toward new and uncharted territory.
