    Battlefield 1943 News Summary

Well, NYCC has come to a close, but news about Battlefield 1943 are still trickling out. Rather than posting every preview from every news site telling you the exact same things (BF1943 is bright and has airplanes and stuff!), I'll pick out some interesting tidbits from the past couple of days.

First up is DICE producer Patrick Liu, who speaks to the Battlefield PC community directly in this article from VideoGamer.com:
Battlefield and Mirror's Edge developer DICE has reiterated its commitment to its hardcore fans, saying, "we are not going casual".

Speaking to VideoGamer.com in an interview to be published tomorrow, producer Patrick Liu insisted DICE, which made its name with the PC-focused Battlefield franchise, "will continue to do what we are best at".
And Liu had an exciting message for Battlefield fans: "I feel a little sad sometimes when people say they're lazy or they're not listening to the fans. Yes of course we keep track of what the forums are saying. I can't say anything really, but we have plans. Definitely big plans. The fans don't need to worry."

Maybe we can put down the pitchforks and torches now. DICE still remembers the little people.

VideoGamer.com also posted their own hands-on impressions of BF1943, and this bit about the destructible environments caught my eye:
1943 is being developed using Swedish developer DICE's Frostbite engine, the one used for BC. As such, it's got destructible environments - destructible environments that, DICE claims, are better than those in BC.

One of the major criticisms of that game was that while you could totally destroy the side of a building, you couldn't take the whole building down. 1943 rights that wrong. In 1943 you can destroy absolutely everything.

Sounds like the bomber run ability is going to be very powerful against infantry if there's nowhere to hide.

CinemaBlend Games found out a little bit more about DICE's release plans for Battlefield 1943, including the possibility of a boxed version for PC:
For Xbox 360 and PS3, you'll only be able to purchase the game digitally. However, for the PC, EA still apparently hasn't decided whether or not they'll release boxed copies of the game. Whether or not you can pick up a BF 1943 disc at your local games store, they will definitely be selling it digitally. Prior to sitting down with Van Dyke, Blend Games also spoke briefly with EA Games publicist Kelly Ekins who confirmed that a decision hadn't been made regarding boxed copies but that they'd have those details soon.

That's all for today, stay tuned to Total Battlefield for more (new) info about Battlefield 1943 and DICE's big secret plans for the PC gamers!

    That is definitely good news.

So, considering the BC2 announcement has already been made, as well as Heroes and 1943, it's safe to assume that 'big plans' is something entirely different?

I'm still keeping the pitchfork handy, though...just in case...

Who knows...maybe I'll need to use it to eat my words?

I mean, just be the size of Bf43 you see that this can't be everything, nevertheless I'm really looking forward to some oldschool dogfights, the price seems to be good for this title. :)

No, you guys aren't reading carefully enough.

He said: "We are definitely still making PC games, we've not forgotten about that. 1943 is announced for PC. Bad Company 2 is announced for the PC, so obviously we got the engine (Frostbite) running on PC. We just recently released Mirror's Edge on PC as well. I would say that we will continue to do what we are best at. We are not going casual, just because that is the trend. We're not good at that. It's not our core focus for the studio."
Sounds like they think console ports can be hardcore somehow.

Yeah, I'm with Dronetek. Read his answer in context at the full article. The answer doesn't say anything. He's just talking about BF:BC2 and BF1943 and how they aren't casual games, so they're hardcore, and thats proof they haven't forgotten us.

I'm not one of the constant Eeyores, but this answer doesn't tell us anything.

You could be right, but I was referring mostly to the Noobtube interview where he mentions at the end that they haven't forgotten about the hardcore PC fan. Sure, it's a faint glimmer of hope, but it's really all I've got to go on at this point.

They still plan on patching BF2 and 2142, so there's your hardcore PC fan support message of the day.

I think the interpretation of what was said was incorrect. IMO, since they have it running "on the PC" already they are saying Frostbite DX is working on the PC and implying it's use for the "hardcore" product which is still not officially acknowledged.

It exists and will be released when it is ready. EA needs a BIG win with this brand and they need to generate revenue ASAP. We just need a little patience.
