So what makes Call of Duty 4 so popular with such a wide audience of hardcore gamers, casual shooter fans and probably your parents? We recently reached out to Bowling to talk in more depth about CoD4's broad appeal and what gives the game such staying power.
"Obviously, from the statistics, it's very apparent that multiplayer is what gave the game its legs," Bowling says. "We could only track people connected to Xbox Live, but there's no denying that the majority of the community buys Call of Duty 4 for the multiplayer. That gave us the slap in the face that that's where the industry is going."
But Infinity Ward had already given itself that slap, way back when the development team first conceived Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Rather than work on the single-player campaign first and tackle the multiplayer second as most developers had traditionally done in the past, the team decided to build both components of the game simultaneously, Bowling said. The approach seemed to work, as the game was critically lauded for both modes, and gamers responded with their wallets and spare time.
