Kotaku Previews Battlefield 1943

The guys/gals at Kotaku had early access to the New York Comic-Con, and had a chance to try out Battlefield 1943. Here are their thoughts about it:

The New York Comic-Con isn't open to regular fans just yet.

I got early press access to check out some games before lines start forming. My first stop was at the EA boot to get some time with Battlefield 1943: Pacific.

What It Is
Battlefield 1943: Pacific is a download only, multiplayer game for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC. The game, while new, is essentially a high-def remake of Battlefield 1942, and focuses more on pickup and play style gameplay. This is the first public demo available for fans to play.

What We Saw
One multiplayer map on the New York Comic-Con show floor at the EA booth. Gordon Van Dyke, associate producer at Dice, was on hand to first show me through some of the new features for the game before I messed around with it.

How Far Along Is It?
The game is scheduled for release this summer with an expected price point between $15 to $20. The download size of the game will be around 350MB

What Needs Improvement
Unlike previous Battlefield games, Pacific only has three unit classes: Infantry, Riflemen, and Scout. Gone are the Medics and Heavy weapons classes. Van dyke explained they wanted every class to be able to fight in every situation. Every class has weapons to fight against the biggest tanks and armor. I would like to have seen more classes with varied abilities and risks.

Also, players have auto-health and unlimited ammo. I find auto-health to be too simple and easy and unlimited ammo means players will be firing without thinking. That will probably mean no more knife fights.

What Should Stay The Same
The destructible environments were a breath of fresh air for me. As someone who played a ton of the original 1942, nothing was more infuriating that driving into a tree and getting stuck. Now, I can run them all over and blow chunks of buildings away. Van Dyke said the game has about the same amount of destruction depth as Bad Company.

I also liked the upgraded graphics. While the original 1942 was fine graphically, 1943 Pacific adds more detail, physics, shadowing, and overall effects. It's very clean looking and stays true to the original maps.

Final Thoughts
I really had no idea what to expect from this game. I was presently surprised to see my favorite online game ever get a much-needed upgrade. The one concern I have is that this won't seem like a completely new, full Battlefield game. There won't be as many maps in the final game and the focus on casual play has me worried. Van Dyke wouldn't specify, but he said if this Battlefield gets a good reaction from fans, Dice might consider adding more and more content down the road.
Some interesting new developments here, especially the fact that you'll have unlimited ammo. Seems that BF1943 is a very close cousin to Battlefield Heroes in this regard.

You can check out the full article here. We'll continue to bring you more Battlefield 1943 info as it rolls in from the New York Comic-Con and other places!

At least they're including boats in this game. In fact, here's a sneak peek of one of them:

Seriously...unlimited ammo, auto-health, only 3 classes (all of which can destroy vehicles), and 24 players max. Yeah, this will definitely tide the hardcore PC BF fans over until BFBC2 (a console port) is released. Assuming, of course, those particular hardcore BF fans happen to be missing half of their skull.

Why the hell are they wasting time with these half-arsed games instead of working on a TRUE sequel to BF2/BF2142? Are 3 mediocre games better than one good one? Augh...

Too funny Wolf, but you are correct. Honestly, I wont get this expansion pack wanabe. I'll wait for the full game, and I don't mean BC2.

DICE had the PERFECT formula with BF1942, the game was great (battles on land, air, and sea), and the support (believe it or not) for the game, along with the support of the MOD community was very good. To leave behind what made the BF series one of the greatest games out there, and releasing this crap is beyond me.

OK, I've been harsh on this game, but wow. I'm somewhat looking forward to it, I can already picture someone doing a quick and dirty DC mod. And I have to admit I do want to play this and it will make me happier then Heroes will. I still want my BF3, a real game with a ton of maps, more then 3 sides and this time around some real expansion.

Every class has bazookas and unlimited ammo, so what's the point of tanks?

yeah really, I sure hope they still reconsider this until summer. If everyone can destroy tanks why not just make infantry only maps right away?

I love how they have given every incentive NOT to team play. Can they not see they're going backwards? :shakehead:

Seems I'll have to give my vote to BC2 then.

Can BF1943 be any more of a joke?

24 players
match-making
regenerating health
unlimited ammo
3 classes

I know you guys hate whining but come on, you can't honestly say that this game impresses you. If you do, then your standards must be really low or you're just under the illusion that the new fancy graphics = awesome game.

Now we have to hope they don't mess up BF:BC2.

I think there's a fairly big chance that they won't. By making BF1943 a very casual game and BC2 for PC a bit more "hardcore", they appeal to two different groups of gamers. By making both the same casual crap they lose a lot of potential customers. BFBC still was a true battlefield game but consolified.

But why make BF1943 at all? Or why not just make it console exclusive? We're already getting BF: Heroes, for free, and that game really can't get any more "casual" than it already is.

At a recent Electronic Arts showcase, Battlefield Heroes was the surprise hit of the show - pulling fans away from other games to have a go at the new casual-focused, cel-shaded shooter. We caught up with executive producer Ben Cousins during the show to find out more.

Interview: Ben Cousins, Executive Producer of Battlefield franchise...

BT: Between the console-based Bad Company and the more casual, kind of accessible feel of Heroes, some hardcore fans may be worried that the once realistic, PC-only shooter is now...

BC: Changed?

BT: Yeah, like it’s going to suddenly become this casual, console-only shooter.

BC: Well, I’m the executive producer on the franchise. I’m really in charge of the entire Battlefield franchise and it’s very clear to me that there are three…well, we have to make this a three-pronged assault with the series really.

First, there are consoles. Consoles are really big, we can’t ignore them, we have to be on the consoles. Second, there’s this casual experiment we’re going with Battlefield: Heroes and the third prong is the hardcore PC gaming experience. We’ve made those in the past and we’ll continue to make them in the future. We aren’t specifically announcing anything, but we are still going to keep those hardcore gamers very happy.
Still waiting on that announcement that'll make hardcore gamers very happy.
