EA: Battlefield Heroes Beta Ending by May 1st

If you glanced at the "EA's Delays, Announcements & Results In Summary" article on IGN yesterday, you may have also noticed a little line about Battlefield Heroes:

* Battlefield Heroes will exit beta by May 1st 2009, at the latest.

Well, when Battlefield Heroes was originally announced back in January last year, it was originally slated for release in the summer of 2008. Of course, summer came and went, and right now we're sitting and waiting for the start of the second stage of the public beta. Today, EA also announced that they're delaying releases to combat the worldwide economic crisis. Will this affect Battlefield Heroes? We'll find out in a couple of months.

How does delaying releases combat the world-wide economic crisis?

Saving on short term expenditure.

A project may only break even a few months into running. Heroes will more likely take a year or two before it even generates profit.

EA may value the short term saving over the potential long term profit.

EA may value the short term saving over the potential long term profit.

But the game is free, so the sooner it's out, the sooner people will start playing it, and the sooner EA will make money from ads/payments for small things

I know the game is free, but you have to remember, EA will have to put forward a substantial amount of capital to get it running. If they don't have a great acid test ratio, then they may want to just hold onto that money!

Not that they'll ever report if it does but I would be very surprised if Heroes makes enough money to cover the cost of devlopment.

It all seems so obvious to me, take BF1942, update the graphics and gameplay to match Battlefield 2 (squads, unlockable kits etc). If the game were released for free I even wouldn't have a problem with ad-support and micro-transactions to buy weapons - as long as it didn't get out of control.

It baffles me why they decided to do a Looney Tunes version of Battlefield, in third person no less - but then I don't get paid the big bucks.

Maybe its to test the water a little to see whether they could go with it in future releases, although a whole game just to test the water seems a little ott.

To be honest does anyone really care about it now? A lot of the hype has died down since summer 08. And it says the beta will end in May 09, not that it'll be released. They might work on it some more and end up delaying it to 2010.

lol I was thinking the same but I'm sure DICE/EA think it's still hyped. Besides, we're just one gaming community... who knows, maybe there's a big dedicated BF:H forums more popular than TGN with non-stop talk about it...
