Could Nintendo Cause An Industry Crash?

An interesting article at Gameplayer.com speculates if the next console released by Nintendo could cause the videogame industry to crash. Take a look:
In 1983 the video game industry crashed. It was primarily felt in North America, but had ramifications across the globe as companies went bankrupt, a whole generation ground to a halt and analysts lifted hammers skywards, ready to drive nails into the infant-sized coffin of the video game industry. The primary causes of the crash were a glut of consoles (which also led to a price-war), a cavalcade of terrible, reputation destroying games (led famously by E.T) and the growing popularity of the personal computer. Thankfully for all gamers, Nintendo turned up with the NES in 1985 and the tumultuous gaming seas were calm once more.

It is quite ironic then, that the next video game industry collapse could be caused by the same company that once saved it. Let us explain…

The Wii is on fire, and no amount of bad “shovelware” press is going to put it out. Well over 40 million units have been sold already (and that figure is climbing faster than a diesel-fuelled flame) allowing Nintendo to send smoke signals to the competing camps of Sony and Microsoft that simply reads, “suckers.” But while Nintendo are bathing in the cash at the moment, their monumental success could be setting the games industry up for a nasty crash, sometime early next decade.

We recently posted an article revealing that the Nintendo Wii now owns 50% of the next-generation console install base. That is a lot of power. But while the dominance of the machine on sales charts suggests that Nintendo is the way of the future, it doesn’t indicate who is actively playing the Wii, nor for what reason.
