Valve Piracy Rates Drop Off Significantly

Valve, a leading digital content distributor and game developer, has released its new piracy numbers and, surprisingly, they are actually down. Valve cites its simultaneous worldwide releases as "tapping an undiscovered market."
"The reason people pirated things in Russia is because Russians are reading magazines and watching television [and] they say, 'Man, I want to play that game so bad,' but the publishers respond, 'You can play that game in six months... maybe,'" Holtman told GameDaily.

And, he added: "When you think about it that way, you think, 'Oh my gosh, I can do some interesting things and make some interesting money off of it.'"
With the inclusion of more companies on the Steam platform, piracy rates across the board could see a significant drop in the next few quarters.

If Steam is having such a significant impact on pirating figures, it would probably be fair to assume that it's sales are very significant also right? This is a really interesting article.

It's kind of surprising that piracy is going in a time where more and more people are beginning to count the pennies, maybe were not all money grabbing bastards after all.

It would be nice if even more games had to be used through steam some how for offline/online play.

I have like 75% of my games on steam... if there's a game both on steam and in the stores, like Crysis Warhead, steam gets my purchase. Valve really have a good business idea with steam.

Steam is doing everything right. They have never let me down. They are a business so I am sure one day they will do something stupid, but right now they are a perfect 10 in my book. If Steam was a woman I would totally date her. If my wife said it was ok.
