Iran NOT joining Entertainment Software Rating Board

Last week we reported that Iran was planning to join the ESRB. Well Gamepolitics has shed some new light on this tidbit of news and it appears that its not all what its cracked up to be. Check it out:

Gamepolitics also put in a request to the ESRB for clarification. Spokesman Eliot Mizrachi took time from his holiday break to respond to GamePolitics:

"Our ratings apply to games available at retail in the U.S. and Canada. No membership is required to submit games to ESRB.

Companies from other countries may submit for rating if the game is to be sold in the U.S. and/or Canadian market... Our ratings apply to games sold in the U.S. and Canada only."

lol ... Iran would NEVER join a western alliance. They like to do things their own way and would simply come up with their own standards body to regulate this.

That's how I remembered it - ESRB being a North American entity only - so it was a bit strange reading it in the other thread. Makes sense that it was a typo/miscue.

Iran is trying to at least take small steps here and there to try to "fit in" with the rest of the world, but if they were to join any sort of ratings system, it would make more sense for them to follow PEGI or some other European or Asian system, based on geography. But given their politics and stricter rules of conduct on many issues, I think having their own unique classification system seems more likely.

It would be surprising if Iran would actually join.
