Now (post-BF2), there are a hell of a lot of people more playing for ranks and stats than there are playing mods for fun.

Shingle and Wake 2142 were community made maps.

wake 2142 was a horrendous map, sorry sir(s) but that map bit hard and it had graphical problems as well as performance issues. how dice approved such a sorry map is beyond me. on the other hand, shingle was an excellent map, as good as dice created maps if not better.

of course it took dice months before making stats on those community maps count. i'm all for community ranked maps if they have a high quality control.

A great deal of complaints about Wake are either artistic (should have been a desert) or about textures Dice made.
Performance issues are again not our department but Shingle had similar problems.
How it plays, yes, that is our fault but it is Wake. It is different and it even provided an entire new game mode. We did deliberately choose Tactical Gamer to play test it and i was happy with the input they had and the final product.

Overall Wake is technically greater than Shingle, like it or not. That is not to say that Shingle represents less work or that it isnt a better map.
However Shingle never had the fundamental flaws of Wake, if you had to choose whether you made a blank canvass map or a re-make you would never take the re-make.

But if you want the otherside of community made maps, irrelevant of whether you like Wake or note you will find my name in a dark and distant read me for my part in it.

Simply put you dont want community made maps, not because of the quality of the work or anything else really, you just dont want it.
2142 lacks mods and they are what you want. You want a huge stream of additional free content, not a couple of extra maps. You want the ranking system linked into mods in some way rather than to let it become far to integral in the future.

Battelfield needs to be thinking in broader terms in the future. The next evolution of the stats system will probably be vastly beyond any modding communitys ability to work with.
Never mind community content in the ranked game, at least as a community try to ensure you get free content to the extent that you get half a dozen games for the price of one. Mods dont just happen, they are a **** load of work and overall the community seems blind to the put off that is the ranking system you guys hold so dear.

I did not buy BF2 or BF2142 for the mods, nor did I expect to have such great mods for the game. I would rather have more maps in the official game than more mods. Don't tell the community what they want.

Really? I've gotten tons of enjoyment and hundreds of hours of play out of mods. In fact, I really feel that AIX is a much funner Battlefield than BF2. Sure, it's not balanced for multiplayer, but that's okay. I've found I enjoy coop play more as the griefers and smacktards are absent...

I'm all about the mods and could care less about the vanilla game. So, we've got multiple opinions to factor into the equation.

I dont mean to, reading my post back it is a little demanding but you do understand that support for modding gives you more content for less money?

How much do you want to pay for a game in the first place if you dont want to pay a subscription and want regular official content.

I understand what you're saying. I don't dislike mods, I just didn't buy the game just for mods.

And luckily, free maps and mods aren't mutually exclusive. :)

Yea, i never bought the game for the mods, i would be happy with more maps.

Although, i've since lost enjoyment in the game when my stats were hacked. They made is fun to play towards, now i've just lost the passion.

I wish someone could fix them. I had a little help getting them back, but not a great amount

I agree. while i like mods like project reality and AIX etc. its sometimes good to play the vanilla game. It kinda does annoy me that mod makers think that they are greater than dice even though they put the game together, made the engine, made some sort of mod tool sometime down the line, yet all some of them can think about is how much greater they are than the people who produced what they used for their work. dont get me wrong, the mod devs hard work does pay off though

I'm not really an expert on mods but in my limited experience 'community maps' and 'mods are just so amateur they're not worth bothering with.

I remember in the early days downloading community maps for games like Quake and Hexen and they were always absolute crap. Wake2142 was a good effort but really not up to standards. I think Operation Shingle is the only community map that I actually like - in fact it's one of my favourite maps.

                        Hello TrouperJac,

It is sad to see you have not had good experiences with MODS but I can assure you there are some terrific ones out there for BF2. Try POE2 as a starters - you won't regret it!

My "issues" with MODS is that there are not enough players out there! Or if there are, it is on some far off server in Germany (MRS RANKED WATTWUERMER) or New York? (TacticalGamer) come to mind. The ping can be high sometimes since I am in Portland, Oregon and I like to play with my settings on medium or high to enjoy the graphics.

Recreational Intel Gamers Group - RIGG has a server in Portland for PoE2 (as well BF2 and SF2). I wish I knew of a way to advertise for it since it is on the West Coast. Check it out: RIGG BF2 Custom (POE-v2.5), 12.180.48.10.

MODS are great and the graphics are beautiful. I hope you try them out.

But, as you said, a major problem with mods is the lack of players phenomenon. While a mod (such as PR or AIX) may make the game feel/play differently, said mod doesn't retain some of the features of the vanilla game. Specifically (in the mods), unless you have an altered server, the ranking system is only present in the stock servers, and ranked ones at that. Believe it or not, those ranks do keep a number of people playing BF2.

Second, mods only get grassroots advertisement, such as news postings on sites like TGN (and on some clan websites if the clan chooses to play that particular mod). A good many players have no idea that quality mods exist, and of those that do and don't participate are a few groups:
                          • Heard of the mod but don't want to spend the time or bandwidth downloading.
                          • Heard of the mod but not interested in checking it out.
                          • Just plain lazy.
                          • Technical issues with installation/running

I dont either, a game does have to be good in the first place to warrent ownership.
However in certain series, such as BF, a strong modding community is implied given the games history.

Also i think that modders are very talented people and games that catch a modders atterntion almost gain an additional seal of quality. Even if you dont play mods you know that it is a good game inside and out if you have a strong associated modding community, not just you loving it.

I dont however think that BF2 or 2142 ever attracted the most talented modders. The work done to BF2 so far is really only cosmetic, given the age of some of the posters talking about mods i would hate to think that they assume BF2 modding is a realistic representation of what modding can do for a game.

In terms of maps, TrooperJac, you must dicount Wake as even if Dice had made it it wouldnt be as good as anyone wants it to be. Really you are comparing Shingle with Shingle and declaring Shingle the winner, you only have one truely original map to base an opinion on, i think you should have more choice in that decision.

But to round a very long and not very good post off...

To have more maps without paying for them ( no subscription ) you have to
                            A. Wait till the nth year till someone at Dice has had enough free time to make one.
                            Or
                            B. Let the community make them.... however for the community to be able to make a map you require modders and if the game gives sweet fa support to modders none exist so you cant have community maps.

Is the upcoming map a DICE production or a community map?

I don't expect DICE to just develop new maps every now and then and release them for free. Expansion packs are the way forward. Northern Strike was great value and had some of the best unlcocks and best maps in my opinion.
