If you had read the article, you'd see that $25,000 came from Microsoft, and the other half from the parents. The parents wouldn't necessarily have to have all that money in the bank, either...they could have gotten a loan, or mortgage on their house, or donations, etc. You'd be surprised at the lengths people will go to in order to raise money when a family member is in trouble.
