IGN: World at War Beta Impressions

The guys over at IGN have posted up three new videos today from the Call of Duty: World at War Xbox 360 beta as well as an impressions article. Take a look:
The in-game support bonuses are nothing to scoff at either. In War, if you play well you'll get momentum that allows you to capture flags faster. The coolest bonus you can get, though, is the attack dogs. Get seven consecutive kills and you can unleash the hounds. They'll run around the map, attacking and killing your enemies. Of course, those enemies can always just shoot them if they see the dogs coming. Kill a dog and you'll save your own tail and get a few experience points for the trouble.

The beta still does have a few hitches. Spawning directly into a fight and dying instantly happens a little too often and the animations on the dogs need a bit of work. But hey, this a beta after all and the experience is pretty darn smooth. A lot of people may have written this Call of Duty game off since it isn't being made by Infinity Ward, the developers who made last year's release. I think those people are going to be surprised. The winning formula from Modern Warfare has largely been kept intact and the new additions all fit like a shirt fresh out of the dryer. Keep an eye on this one.

I haven't been watching this game much since College started but does it seem to anyone that vehicles are going to be overpowered pretty much like how tanks were abused in BF2?

Maybe if they were manned by a good crew, but from the footage I have seen they are slow and easy to blow up. One of the now many articles also mentioned that reload time is very slow as well as the shells have a small splash damage.

So the splash damage is small, reload time is slow, and the tank lumbers along.

Also, there are no engineers or repair crates like in BF2/142 so I would think the tanks would be more like 1942, which I killed my share on foot

ALSO, there is an option to turn off vehicles on servers and still stay ranked.

I think we will be OK. I might be eating my words in a month, but I dont think so.

From what I've been reading, I think you're correct. I haven't seen many complaints about vehicles being overpowered. And in one of the videos in the Media section, it shows an infantry man standing beside an enemy tank, and he's easily able to stay alive as the tank tries to get him (it had only a driver, not a top MG gunner).

It does seem like Treyarch designed tanks to battle against tanks, and infantry against infantry.

We'll have to try it on the PC of course, but so far so good, IMO.

Crunch, I believe you're correct in your comparison with the tanks in BF1942. Also, in CoDUO, there were enough bazookas placed throughout the map along with satchel charges that if people wanted to destroy a tank and be on foot, it could be done. :)

And the tanks weren't too speedy in that game either. CoDUO had added the 'sprint' function to the CoD series which also helped people get away from tanks, and speed up the CoD gameplay.

Exactly my fears at first... Let me go after a while. Firstly, despite vehicles being overpowered on BF2 i did not mind them at all.

Second, all of the things CptainCrunch said seem true.
I think COD will be a good game with the vehicles. :salute:

OH LET ME ANSWER!!!! I played the beta and the tanks are jus fine rather kinda pointless. The main gunner no longer has an MG se he cant rape infantry you have to hit within 5 feet of someone to kill them with the main cannon, and its soooo slow its very easy to get blown up sincie every one in the Beta has a Bazooka or explosive om some sort. So unless you have an EXTREMLEY good gunner on top i personally think getting in a tank is suicidal. BUT! also they people on the tanks MG are very easy to shoot too so the tank is VERY balanced.

for some reason the tank on that map seems very out of place. the problem with these port games is that we cant have bf2 style wake island maps where vehicles and infantry are balanced. on consoles the maps are small and therefore tanks loose all power and are rendered useless. i want an operation aberdeen in cod waw 64 players mmmmmmmgood

Did you just say BF2 Wake Island is balanced?

They have mentioned a few times now that there will be larger vehicle maps...so I wouldn't base all vehicle impressions off of one map.

That's right. PC will have access to larger maps, and probably a lot more tanks for us to use on each map as well, not just the 2 per map that Console has.

I do like how they've "nerfed" the tanks in certain ways, so that they won't dominate the infantry like they do in other games. *cough*BF2*cough*
