Building Co-Op From The Ground Up

Treyarch community manager Josh Olin has posted up a new blog today over on IGN that details the co-op portion of Call of Duty: World at War. Check it out:
Welcome back everyone! As promised, our latest blog is dedicated to Co-Op, which is arguably one of the largest undertakings this team has ever tackled in a game. I sat down with our Producer, Dan Bunting, who sheds light on the size and scope of engineering co-op, along with the risks and benefits associated with introducing the feature into the Call of Duty franchise for the first time. First, a little background on co-op and what it means to Call of Duty gameplay…

Finding a Co-Op game will work as you'd expect. On the 360 and PS3, you'll be able to create private Co-Op games, or find public Co-Op games with anyone else around the world. For PC players, we created Co-Op game lobbies, so when you join a Co-Op server in-game – instead of immediately connecting to a server – you join that server's lobby. The host will then choose the settings, and start the game.

Now, what exactly will Call of Duty: World at War bring the players in the way of Co-Op? Let's see... Unfortunately I can't talk about everything just yet; however, I can tell you that we do have a third Co-Op experience in store, which I promise is like nothing you've ever seen before in a Call of Duty game, but for now...

Its funny because this part is what is making me think to go ahead and pre-order. Its the most exciting part.

Also, look at the revive on the soldier. He is in last stand. I wonder if the revive perk puts you in last stand AND you can be revived. I kinda like that. I know there are not many fans of last stand. Even I hated it more than martyrdom for most, but that adds a twist to it.

From what I read before (and have now seen in vids), that's exactly what it does. They changed "Last Stand" to "Second Chance"...you go into the Last Stand animation as before, but now if someone else who also has Second Chance enabled as a perk gets to you before the time limit runs out, they can now revive you.

You can see it in action a couple times in this vid: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/40661.html

ps. For those who were concerned before, the voices now have Russian accents.

I'm impressed with what I've seen. I appears that Treyarch did take notes and have brought more to the table with WaW.

I agree. It seems like CoD4 was a testing ground and they adjusted for a lot of the things people complained about.

Of course, there is stil martyrdom and a few other things like that, but come on!

CoD6 should have some pretty awesome things as well, especially since the bar is so high

When you look back on it, COD4 had a lot of new stuff in it, and played pretty damn well. Perfect? No, but still quite good.

IW could've added more to it of course, but that would've extended the coding and testing time by quite a bit. But now, Treyarch and IW can use the basics from COD4, keep what works, and slowly build upon it.

COD:WW will add vehicles, co-op, and at least one new game type (CTF). And as Crunch said, I agree that "COD6" will very likely continue to build upon that base. It really does look like some smart people did some really good planning in how they were going to go forward with this franchise.

Exactly. I do find it strange that they pushed by the publish date on "CoD6" though. I know those things get adjusted all the time, but when its 2010 already, why announce it?

                  Agreed!

They announced the date, so you can be in anticipation for a longer amount of time. :p Or, also for the financial stats, and with anything, if you really want to motivate yourself, you tell other people about it. And if you tell millions of people you're going to release your game in 2010, you're gonna make it happen. :)

                  If you have a dream:
                  -Write it down
                  -Say it out loud
                  -Tell other people
-Take the actions required to achieve it

***Warning***Not all dreams are mean to come true pervs...lol
