World at War Q&A - PC Graphics and Features

GameSpot has posted up a new interview today that has some more details for all the PC gamers out there. Take a look:
GS: Are there any other PC-specific features you can tell us about in Call of Duty: World at War?

CS: Our goal is to bring the same game experience to multiple platforms, and I think we are hitting our mark. That said, my team is very consciously making a PC title with a focus on all the things we love about PC gaming. COD:WAW looks fantastic in higher PC resolutions than you can get on a console. It plays great on high-end rigs, but we've optimized for more-modest gear, too. The PC version is more configurable with respect to controls, graphics, and performance options. And support for mods--not just multiplayer but co-op mods too!

GS: Speaking of COD4, that game featured one of the most robust and addicting online multiplayer modes we've seen in a while, and you've taken another page from Infinity Ward's book by including persistent ranks and stats in your own multiplayer mode. You've also added a new squad mechanic. Tell us how online squads work.

CS: Squads make it easier to play with your friends while helping to keep your team organized into groups. This is particularly fun on our large multiplayer maps.

"CS: We started with the technology from the best FPS available. We cranked up the graphics and audio. We ratcheted up the hardcore intensity. We kept the awesome multiplayer. We added vehicles and squads and co-op. Can I go play now?"

And talk about a good situation as they mentioned where they have the engine and it's great, they get to focus on creating content. Granted, they bumped the image up, but from what we've seen so far, they seemed to have utilized that gift.

The folks at Activision/IW/Treyarch seemed to have planned well...they invested time in building a solid engine and game framework which they understood, and that allowed them to build off of it for future titles (including COD:WW, COD"6", etc)...by doing this, they worry less about the technical aspects, and can concentrate on content and features.

This is something that EA never seemed to learn or understand, particularly in the MOH series in recent years. They constantly switch technology, usually buying it from an outside source, which means that they don't understand it as well as they could if they had built it. And the results have been obvious...their games often suffer from technical problems with the engines or netcode, which both overshadows any good features/content they have, as well as taking valuable programmer time to decipher and fix (which then often results in delays and push-backs in the schedule).

Too true. It saddens me b/c they have a lot of positives, but when the game engine can't function well, what good are any of the elements of the game?

I really hope that their new squad feature will really work well, I think that this is crucial. My biggest beef with CoD4 is the complete lack of team work, it's basically a lone wolf game. The reason I enjoy games like BF2, 2142, and TF2 is the emphasis on team work, and working together to achieve the goal.
If they want to make CoD:World at War authentic, or feel like a WWII game, they're going to need to really work on implementing that squad feature.

I really wish cod was a pc only title. They dont understand what the pc side is about. I would hope that they have a promod built in. But im 100% sure no one at treyarch is even thinking about the competitive side of the game. Cod 4 is great but really needs better maps made just for s&d. I wish they would just remove all the none competitive things in the game. Like singleplayer just delete it. Perks screw em. The Cod series need a title for competitive gaming only. Thats build for Cevo and Cal. That Would be something i would like to see. Why not cod 6. Screw Space Marines. Make cod 6 and competitive only game with a lot of really good maps and thats it. No neeed for single player. Would be easy to do.

What many competitive players don't understand is that they are still a vast minority of the COD (and gaming in general) community (less than 10%). Making a game only for competitive players wouldn't be smart, because it would not appeal to the general public, and would not make very much money.

The correct plan is to make a game with wide appeal, and enable server admins to customize servers as much as possible to give them the gameplay experience that they want. Taking away choice is almost never a good idea.

Whiskey hit the nail on the head there. Believe me, I've been a competitive gamer for years, but gamers who are in competition and pub players can be two completely worlds apart sometimes. They want to make money, and this game, like others, will be easy for competitive leagues to add a mod to so that they can have a competitive league that they feel is fair and balanced. Plus, different leagues have different specifications as to what they want.

Also as Whiskey said, the majority of gamers are not in competitive play. As you can easily tell by going online in pubs and pwning face. :)
