GamePro Hands-On Report for World at War

A few weeks ago we reported that many multiplayer details for Call of Duty: World at War had been released in the October issue of GamePro magazine. The issue has now been released and the magazine's website has been updated with some info on the vehicles in multiplayer, 12 brand new screenshots, and 3 new tank renders. Check it out:
Judging by our hands-on experiences with World at War, tanks seemed to be an enjoyable but not overwhelming addition to the otherwise classic Call of Duty multiplayer action. Crucially, the tank's cannon suffers from a sluggish firing rate and relatively small explosive radius, tradeoffs that enable infantry to sprint past safely in between volleys. If you want to be a true terror with the tank, you'll need to devote your Perks to upgrading the base speed and offensive power, though these sacrifices will leave you more vulnerable when on foot. And Call of Duty purists can relax, because tanks can be disabled via the match menu -- check a preference box and you'll automatically be redirected to infantry-only matches.

Greased Bearings: A new vehicle Perk that speeds up the rotation of your tank's main cannon, Greased Bearings allows you to switch between targets faster. This will help you keep hiding enemies on their toes, though the tank's main cannon isn't always the best choice against speedy infantry.

Ordinance Training: This special ability gives a small boost to the firing rate of the tank's main cannon. This is probably the most instantly useful of the new vehicle Perks, partly because the tank's default firing speed is quite sluggish.

Water Cooler: The tank's secondary machine gun will overheat with extended use. Selecting Water Cooler will allow you (or your buddy) to fire much longer before entering the cooldown mode. As such, Water Cooler is must useful if your team is being overwhelmed with enemy infantry.

Lead Foot: This Perk is designed for drivers, increasing the top speed of the normally slow-moving vehicles. Even after equipping Lead Foot you won't exactly be zipping around the levels in these armored goliaths, but every little bit helps.

I never played a CoD with vehicles. Does it require a driver, gunner, and cannon operator?

In CoD United Offensive, one guy was the driver/gunner and one guy could be the cupola gunner

Err, why is the minimap an inch from the edge of the screen?

I could be wrong, but I thought I read somewhere that it was like that in COD4 as well for Consoles. Something about putting the map further inward on the screen to account for different sized TV's that are still in use?

          ..

I'm not normally a big fan of vehicles...I didn't mind them in COD:UO, didn't enjoy them at all in BF2...but it sounds like Treyarch has tried to put a fair bit of balance into them in COD:WW. I like that you have to choose perks to improve either your character, or your vehicle on those maps.

Why is there a guy just holding a 30. cal in the air and shooting? Why do both the Jap's and the American's have Russian guns? this game looks strange...

1st Pic = someone playing on the russian side
2nd Pic = someone playing on the japanese side
3rd Pic = someone playing on the american side

Notice the flags in the bottom left corner :p

Also check out 1st Pic -> that's not domination, that's conquest... or it looks very similar to that, conquest was like the DoD gametype, but more linear, you could only cap the 'next objective' and not the one half way across the map, so it simulates your team actually pushing up as a team together to win the battle...
2nd Pic - not sure what gametype, it's probably war (tdm) but must have just started...
3rd Pic - it's gotta be war (tdm) with scores like that and no waypoints/no compass icons...

The graphics actually look kind of crap... The first and second ones at least. Things dont seem to fit with each other very well.

Thats kinda neat that you need a team to operate the vehicles. Thats how it is in real life.

In Battlefield you hit the F# keys to switch seats. Is that how it works in CoD?

Ya it's like that Crunch, but (as far as I remember) you could only switch up/down seats, it's not like BF2 where you can go exactly to one seat with one button, you had to scroll through the seats, though that being said there was only ever 4 seats max (the jeep) so it didn't really matter, whereas BF2 has vehicles with 8 seats... I don't think we'll see anything that big... I'm guessing 6 would be the max, but it's probably 4...

I seem to recall at least one article or dev blog talking about HC...Treyarch has kept many of the features from COD4's MP, and despite the complaining on some forums, HC is very popular publicly, so I doubt that they'd remove it. I'd say the odds are very good it'll be in.

War is not just tdm, it's the new gamemode. I thought it was domination, but you may be right about it being more of a conquest mode. I just assumed that since CoDUO had domination, and some of the same devs are making this game, along with many other similarities from UO, that it would be domination, but new name.

"In a departure for Call of Duty 4's infantry-focused action, World at War adds a new, larger-scale multiplayer gametype called "War" that introduces vehicles for the first time."

What exactly do they mean by the first time? It's not the first time for a CoD game to have vehicles in mp (CoDUO) and it's obviously not the first time for other games. So where did the author come up with that statement? lol

Glad they are keeping tanks as an options. More options, more happy people.
