id Software lead designer, Tim Willits, stated that due to the size limitations of the Xbox 360's storage medium all versions of Rage will have significant amounts of content removed.
Originally slated to have several wastelands available for the user to play in and explore, the game will now feature just two such areas. Granted, each wasteland is then further broken down to several smaller instances.
With the Xbox 360 using DVD's that can hold between 6 to 8 GB worth of data, the PlayStation 3 Blu-ray disks holding 25GB easily, and the PC able to support any amount of data, concessions had to be made to fit the game onto two DVD disks to work with the Xbox 360 version. Once this happened, the decision was made to scale back every version of the game. No changes have been made to the overall story line, but Willits admits that "how the player experiences Rage's story has been altered."
Releasing the game on a three DVD set for the Xbox 360 would prove to be too costly for the developer. Other games have come on multiple disk releases, but only after Microsoft offered to pay the bill for the extra cost.
