Samsung, one of the companies that backed Sony in the HD format wars with Blu-ray has stated that the format will only last around five years.
The director of Samsung UK's consumer electronics, Andy Griffiths, said, "it [Blu-ray] has 5 years left, I certainly wouldn't give it 10." Sony has repeatedly made the claim that the PlayStation 3 would have a ten year long lifespan. What exactly happens in that five year difference?
Griffiths did not continue on to explain his reasoning behind his comment, or speculate as to what format would bring down Blu-ray so suddenly. It could possibly be the rising interest in digital downloads that has Mr. Griffiths so worried. Only time will tell if Blu-ray has staying power.
