Nvision 08 Showcases 3D Gaming

SAN JOSE, CA—Depending on which product you purchase, the age of 3D PC gaming is here. Visual computing technology company Nvidia showcased two new 3D gaming technologies at its inaugural Nvision 08 technology conference.
San Diego-based iZ3D had its $600 22-inch widescreen 3D LCD monitor on display at the show, which is available now. Spore was running on this monitor while a prototype of the new 26-inch 3D LCD was playing Unreal Tournament 2004. According to Aaron Rapp, marketing manager at iZ3D, just about any game released over the past five years that uses DirectX 8, 9 or 10 will work with this new technology. All that's needed is the monitor and the polarized glasses.
"The glasses allow one eye to see the left image of the game and the other eye to see the right image," explained Rapp. "We're using linear polarization, which utilizes straight angles, compared to movie theater 3D glasses, which use circular polarization."
Rapp said the team already had Warhammer Online running in 3D. He said while over 400 games will translate to 3D using this monitor, certain games, like Team Fortress 2, World of Warcraft and Counter-Strike really shine in 3D.
"For most games, you add a depth of how far away your target is," said Rapp. "A lot of people have told us that 3D has improved their aim. It improves a lot of the gameplay and it makes everything seem more interesting."
While iZ3D will run on any recent Nvidia or competing card, Nvidia is getting into the 3D game itself this fall. The company has partnered with DLP TV manufacturers like Mitsubishi and PC LCD maker ViewSonic to give consumers the ability to play any PC game from the past five years in 3D. The new GeForce Stereoscopic technology consists of an emitter and 3D glasses, which have yet to be priced or dated with a hard release.
