After the small hints Relic gave us they now made it official. The fourth race in the upcoming strategy-roleplay-hybrid Dawn of War II will be the race called Tyranids. Along with the complete screenshot revealing the creature behind that shadow and another exclusive shot they brought us a tiny insight what we can expect from this brutal race:
Simultaneously IGN has released the extended CGI trailer and a complete interview covering the Tyranids and the features of the game. Check it out:
Just a few minutes ago I discussed about how they could approach implementing the 'Nids into the game, so let's hope Relic will do something very creative.
The Tyranids are in Dawn Of War II!
For us, the Tyranids was a way to give the fans something they have been asking for ever since Dawn Of War… but it wasn’t until we designed the Essence 2.0 Engine did we think that the Tyranids could be brought to the Dawn Of War universe they way that we felt we could do them justice and in the way that the fans deserve. The Tyranids are a great way for us to bring something new and different to the franchise… a completely different race which operates unlike any other seen in Dawn of War to date.
“Each Tyranid is a living weapon, perfectly adapted to its designated function, but each creature is no more than a single cell in a galactic entity governed by a monstrous Hive Mind. As the Tyranid hive fleets drift through space they strip all life from the worlds in their path, leaving nothing but scoured rock in their wake…

IGN: So tell us briefly about the Tyranids. What are they? What can they do? And why have the fans wanted them in Dawn of War for so long?
Philippe Boulle: The Tyranids are a terrifying alien race who wants nothing less than to consume all life. They come from beyond our galaxy, arriving in massive tendrils called Hive Fleets. Once near a targeted world, the Hive Fleet deposit millions of spores, which quickly grow into legions of Tyranid creatures and in a few weeks can reduce a thriving world to a dry, dead husk. The Hive Fleet then moves on to the next world, then the next, then the next...
Fans have been waiting for the Tyranids since the very first Dawn of War game. Part of the appeal is that the Tyranids are a real contrast to the other races in Dawn of War. [They're] based entirely on biology and geared toward consumption, they stand against armies wielding powerful technology and defined by personal honor, religious zeal and other moral codes.
IGN: How do the Tyranids differ in terms of gameplay to the other, familiar factions of Dawn of War II?
Philippe Boulle: The Tyranid swarm is a single organism, not an army of individuals. Defensive "meat shields" of disposable creatures protect powerful specialists. These specialists also serve as conduits for the guiding Hive Mind, empowering the smaller units and making them more effective.
Players will actually see the swarm change tactics and behavior as it comes under the guidance of these synapse creatures.
