Next Call of Duty Penciled In For 2009

Kotaku is reporting today that a new Call of Duty game, yet to be announced, will hit shelves in 2009 and will likely be created by Infinity Ward. Take a look:

You wouldn't be surprised to learn that "an all-new Call of Duty" title will be released in 2009, would you? Good, because that's exactly what's going to happen, according to Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, who talked up the next Call of Duty in a post earnings release con call.

Kotick said that the publisher will "leapfrog" studios, which we'll assume to mean that, since Treyarch is hard at work on Call of Duty: World At War, that Call of Duty 4 developer Infinity Ward will be taking the reins on this one.

The Infinity Ward team has one unspecified project in the works for Activision, whom it just re-signed with, rumored to possibly have a sci-fi bent to it. Space marines? It's just crazy enough to work.

With so little time to make it, I find it hard to believe this can be very good. They just finished COD4 in late 07, to make a new game on a new (and good) engine it would take much longer than that I would think.

2 years is plenty of time to make a new game (this would be the approx length of time between COD4 and this "new" project).

What some people don't realize is that the planning for a new game often begins before the old one is finished. Once the framework for a game is underway, some people from the dev team begin to split their duties, spending some time helping to get the current version to market, but spending more and more time planning and engineering the next version. There were people working on "COD6" before COD4 was even finished, even though it was unannounced.

This "leapfrogging" that Activision is doing between IW and Treyarch for COD titles is a good thing, IMO. It lets each studio have a 2-year creative cycle, but still allows Activision to put a new COD title on the shelf each year. Not allowing enough time between versions is a mistake that EA has often been criticized for, especially in their sports genre. Games are so complex now that 1 year really isn't enough if you want to make significant change, but 2 years is currently very do-able. I've held the belief for a long time that if EA was smart, they'd produce a "sim" version of their sports games every 2nd year, and in the alternate year in between, have another studio or team produce an "arcade" version (ie. year 1 = Madden, year 2 = Blitz, year 3 = Madden, year 4 = Blitz, etc).

But they make a killing off Madden every year? :p

And I hope this isn't sci-fi. I finally played Crysis the other day, suckage. I know, I'm late to play it, but I don't play sp much anymore, and that game was why. Lame sp. I guess it got hype b/c of graphics, f/x and such like FarCry, but for the actual gameplay and story, boring.

Who knows, maybe they could make the sci-fi work, but I've played Halo, Crysis, Haze, UT, other sci-fi shooters and they don't do much for me. But that's coo, I could just continue playing World at War by that time.:)

hmmm i think they are going way to fast on this , and i think they are not going to release enything for cod 4 enymore. Got 3 maps and that s it

SCI-FI Im not sure if I would be into that, I was not that crazzy about Modern and I like it but CoD:World at War is coming and its WWII and I LOVE WWII so I think and I know Im going to stick to that. I just Hope CoD:WW is not a 1 time game the Pacific War can't be done in 1 game we are going to need sequels/expansion packs.

People think Sci-fi is light sabers and lasers.. It really can be ANYTHING YOU WANT. Because IT HAS NOT HAPPENED YET.

I love UT/Quake and everything that has some tiny bit to do with Sci-Fi, so this could be really cool. People, give them a break here, why do everything have to be "realistic" to be fun?

It's sad that one of the most common reasons that BF2 players never played 2412 was that it had "lasers and ****" which it never had.

Only 3 maps? We got 7 patches full of bug fixes and something tells me that they very likely will make more patches. And if they don't, 7 patches is much more than you can ask for.

I think it will be Call of Duty: Civil War and most of the battle deaths will be from gangrene, dysentery, and syphilis since all the weapons can't shoot the broad side of a barn at 50 meters and take two minutes to reload.

Aaaanyway. I want vehicles damn it. Not air vehicles...maybe not even heavy tanks...but I want bigger maps with jeeps and light tactical vehicles. That's what COD needs. The only complaint I have about COD4 is that the maps are so tiny.
