Battlefield Heroes Delayed, Coming Late 2008

Shacknews is reporting today that Battlefield Heroes will be delayed until late 2008. Take a look:

EA DICE's upcoming free-to-play PC shooter Battlefield Heroes has been delayed and is now expected to arrive late this year, publisher Electronic Arts announced today.

The ad-supported, web-based shooter was previously expected to launch this summer. During a conference call today, EA CEO John Riccitiello revealed that the game is now "launching at the end of the calendar year."

"We decided to increase its focus on some of the social networking features," Riccitiello noted, stressing that the studio hopes to incorporate beta tester feedback and implement new features. "The last thing we want to do is jab it in the marketplace."

Riccitiello seemed optimistic about the title's development despite the delay, adding that Battlefield Heroes "still feels like it's progressing much like we anticipated."

"We're not ready to release it yet" might be a little more plainspoken.

Nah, the real reason is this:

they do not wish to compete with Quake Live unless they have all of Quake Live's feature set in their own game.

Being that id is now part of EA....it all makes perfect sense. They do not wish for their own intellectual properties to compete with eachother during the same time period because it cuts the user base in half. By allowing Quake Live to go first, they capitalize on ALL the users....and once people get sick of Quake Live, then Heroes will feel new to them.

Only thing I wonder about now is if any announcement for BF3 will similarly be delayed until they ship Heroes, or if it has its own schedule?

I agree Heroes delay is hardly surprising, echoing what everyone else here thinks. All good games have at least one delay, after all.

As much as i find EA's business approach to creativity to be daft, i dont see that even they would be as silly to shoot themselves in the foot.
Heroes doesnt detract from the cash in hand of video game buyers, hence it is unlikely to effect sales in any noticeable way. Its an 'as well as' rather than 'instead of' title.
