  • Battlefield Pirates 2 Mod Update - Introducing the Frigate

The Battlefield Pirates 2 mod website has been updated today with some news showing off a new class of ship. Here's what they had to say:
PiratePlunder brings us the largest ship in the BFP2 fleet to date - called the Frigate. This beauty features eight captain controlled 12lb cannons, with several additional crew controlled cannons mounted on the rear firing deck. In this article, we'll review the Frigate, compare it to other ships available in Release 2 and check out some screenshots of it used on a Naval Deathmatch map called "Lost At Sea" created by Catbox.

The term Frigate comes from the French term "to build long and low". The Dutch were among the first to employ Frigates on the high seas in the early 17th century, using them to protect merchant ships, to blockade ports and to combat privateers. Built for speed and maneuverability, the Frigates had very long range and could deliver marines to distant shores making them choice ships for naval captains eager to see some action - as compared to the larger ships of the line which were considered more valuable.

A note on that bottom right pic - the Cutter was the largest ship in Release 1.

There's been a bit of an uptick in player counts since we started putting out some video of the mod... A thread on our site suggests that you can find 15-20 on some servers, esp early on the weekends (due to EU traffic). And for some mods, thats a LOT of players. LOL Nothing worse than being on a server with some crickets - and believe me, we've been there.

Hopefully R2 will hold people's attention longer.... its certainly got a wider appeal we believe.

I'm very interested in how you guys are handling ship speed and player collision detection. The Battleship mod had to keep ship speeds very low, and even then you could easily randomly die from "running into the ship" at high speed every so often.

Did you guys ever create your own custom deck material? Same principle applies with a humvee travelling across a bumpy terrain without taking damage. We've got the custom deck material applied to all interior facing railing edges as well to try to make a padded room type of environment.

Trick seems to be to control the sliding of the player though - which for us is probably easier... Our ships are smaller and full of clutter (cannons, masts, etc) which help propel the players along. But yeah, accidents do happen - so we try to keep plenty of open seats available on cannons, swivel portcannons and whenever theres just a bench seat left, we allow the player to look around and shoot from the seat. One of those annoying things that wasnt an issue as much in BF42.
