World at War Preview - Convoy Shredding and Russian Sniping

IGN has posted up a new preview today for Call of Duty: World at War which talks about two of the levels I actually got to see during my visit to Treyarch: Sniper and PBY. Take a look:
The first new mission takes place with you as a crew member on a PBY Catalina flying boat that stumbles upon a Japanese convoy in the Pacific. (If you haven't heard yet, World at War is set during World War II.) The Catalina is a fairly large plane, but for some reason this one is a bit understaffed, so your job is to run between various gun positions on the plane to basically shred the Japanese vessels below. There are various .50 caliber machine gun blisters along the fuselage, as well as a powerful twin .50 caliber turret up near the nose. The pilots will tell you which gun to man, and you've got to maneuver through the plane quickly to get to it and start firing.

It might seem that a machine gun against steel vessels wouldn't do much damage, but the Japanese ships are fairly thin-skinned, plus they are loaded with plenty of ordnance and stuff that does blow up. The Catalina does slow passes over the convoy, so this missions is mainly about the joy of sheer destruction. It doesn't seem too challenging compared to the brutal close-range jungle firefights seen in other levels, but it may well provide some visceral satisfaction after slogging through ground combat.

Oh... we are stepping away from the slight realism CoD4 brought us to running like a headless chicken in a plane to hit targets...

Oh boy, Russian sniping. How original. That's never been done in a COD game before.

Its their version of the CoD4 gun ship mission. Sit back and blow stuff up.

Actually, CoDUO had a mission very similar to this in which you ran throughout the plane manning diff mg's and you were fighting off enemy planes that were attacknig yours mid-air. So it's pretty much identical to that mission except you'll be shooting Japs instead of Germans, and they'll be on boats instead of planes in the air. The mission makes sense since Grey Matter did that for UO also. It was a fun mission.

My favorite missions in CoD4 were the helicopter missions, the rest of sp was kind of "meh" uneventful imo. But the heli levels were actually fun and diff.

That would make sense. I never played UO, just CoD1 and 4.

Was the UO level intense or more laid back and just do the best you can?

I was wondering if anyone would remember the plane missions from previous COD's/MOH's. :)

There was a bomber mission in CoD:UO, although you were much higher and shot at enemy fighters as opposed to ships...

That's true, especially because it was a totally different experience which is unique throughout the game.

Does anyone else hope we get some missions were we play as the Japanese or Germans? I know its not gonna happen, but I would love it if it did. At least we get some Russian action...

Yeah, there are two sides to a war. Although I can see the argument that it could be seen to promote Nazism or the invasion.

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed this?

What ever engine it uses (seems to be the same as CoD4) they haven't upgraded the graphics at all and the engine itself seems to be capable of stunning cloth textures and bump maps as seen on the Russian guy (taking into account resolution, load time and demands). But somewhat poor specular maps on soft objects such as his face which ruins the bump maps.
Also when AA is turned off the edges seem to be quite blurred and of poor quality also seen in this shot.

                          Red Dot Scope?

                          What era is this? WWII?

Did RDS even exist back then?

It's a tracer round in the scope

That makes sense. Got me a bit worried there, historical accuracy would have been the worst way to kill the game...
