Nvidia: "Consoles Don't Threaten PC Gaming"

Shacknews is reporting that Nvidia VP of content business development states that consoles do not threaten PC gaming. Take a look:
Nvidia VP of content business development believes that the success of consoles "don't threaten PC gaming," but rather provides an "exciting future" as PCs will later receive enhanced editions of console games.

"The console is a baseline, the PC is going to be an improved version," he explained to Eurogamer. "If you look at Gears of War or Assassin's Creed...the PC versions had additional aspects to them that also made them attractive, whether you owned the console version or not. The PC version was better. That's an exciting future."

Echoing the sentiment of Crysis developer Crytek, Taylor expects to see less PC-exclusives as a result of rampant piracy and the "value of consoles," but noted that PCs should see more digital authentication and "service" releases in the future.

"You're going to start out with a basic service, which is the game, and then increase the value of that service through patches, mod packs, expansions, maps and so on," Taylor explained. "Most PC gamers also own consoles--not all of them, but a lot of them."

"PC gaming is changing and consoles don't threaten PC gaming. They're just different, he concluded. "That's why I don't see anything threatening about consoles at all."

I'm not buying it. It has been an increasing trend over the last few yrs that whenever Consoles & PC are developed together on a game, the PC version highly resembles the Console version, with a few tweaked features and quick add-ons.

If this is what he calls "enhanced", then it's just spin, IMO. Truly enhanced PC versions will require a fair bit of work on the part of developers, which costs money, and most of them so far have not shown a willingness to do that.

Alex said it - they're not going to say anything that will make PC gaming look threatened, and risk driving even more people to Consoles.

Consoles DO threaten PC gaming.... if FFOW doesn't show anyone this FACT then they need to get their vision checked.

Couldn't of said it any better. I'm not trying to put down PC gaming but the games lately have been quite crap compared to the console versions. Hell I was pulled in by a console when I was a true die hard PC gamer. For the value, you can't beat it.

Yup. The PS3 and Xbox are a serious threat to PC gaming. A simple platform and a lack of piracy makes it a far more attractive market.

With the advent of huge hard-drives and 8gb flash drives, you'd be surprised how easy it is to pirate games on the X-box 360 and the PS3.

It's also very - very - very - very - very - very - very easy to pirate blu-ray movies using the PS3.

It's only a matter of time before Sony is forced to address this issue, when movie production companies and publishers start breaking out the lawyers. I can already see them bitching at Sony for not including any useful DRM in their consoles.

It's surprisingly easier to pirate console games than it is PC games. You don't even need a crack.

Thing is, it's not a widespread problem. Your average console playing can't do it and thus, it's not a problem (yet).

Consoles threaten PC Gaming cause of its greed drivin power.... The thing with them is that every other year a better one comes out that "YOU HAVE TO HAVE" and then you have the upgrade cycle cept its for a whole new console. The thing people need to accept is that PC gaming will always be better with that cycle mostly now since the prices of things have really come down.

Sooner or later consoles will come to an end..I figure the next few years as PC parts get even cheaper, easier to use, and more powerful. I haven't owned a console since the old Nintendo and never will I get another one as they don't interest me one bit compared to my Computers.

That's only if you have to have every different Console that comes out. If you stick to just one brand (ie. Xbox or PlayStation) then a new one only comes out every 3-5 yrs or so. The R&D costs are too high for console makers to crank them out any faster as they have to recover their investment...unless they go to a more modular nature in the future, where you'll be able to swap/plug-in upgraded HDD's, processors, GPU's, etc, just like PC's. While this is possible, I have a feeling it will be resisted strongly by game developers because it will then nullify the "standard components" that Consoles currently enjoy, and start to require different levels of graphics like PC's, which results in more work.
