Valve Steps Up, Defends PC Gaming

IGN has posted up a new article today that has Valve taking an in-depth look at the state of PC gaming. Here's an excerpt from the story:
Statistics Valve pulled from the Gartner Group said over 255 million new PCs were purchased in 2007 and that more than 260 million worldwide use their PCs to play games, indicating there is a huge untapped potential with the PC platform. "In a single year the PC has much, much larger volumes of scale than the largest console ever did over its entire lifetime," Newell said. Of course not all the PCs purchased would be able to run many of the high-end games such as Crysis on high settings, but that's not what PC gaming is about anymore, according to Valve. It's moving away from graphical power and moving more toward accessibility, ease of use, and connectivity. "You're missing opportunities if you define yourself as a wrapper around a set of graphics hardware, which sometimes it seems like some of the console guys do," Newell said. "Graphics are certainly good, but if you're not trying to figure out how to connect your customers together and generate a community and social aspect... it's something I've talked to Will Wright about a lot and I think he's doing a great job in showing how much value there can be in connecting those customers together."

Valve maintains the PC platform is the breeding ground for technological innovation as competing hardware manufacturers continuously drive change. "If Intel stumbles for a while AMD steps in and solves their problems. If Nvidia slows down in terms of pushing graphics technology ATI is sitting right there to take as much of their business away from them as they can. We see that more and more it's the open PC platform that's driving the basic media standards, data standards, connection standards, graphics standards, compute standards that are being incorporated into consoles," Newell said. "Consoles are really just becoming step-children of the capital investments that are being made."

This issue is still very up-in-the-air, IMO. Remember that much, if not most, of Valve's revenue comes from PC, so it's very much in their interest to not allow the perception of any decline in PC gaming. Everything in the industry contains a lot of spin, one way or another.

Only time will tell how this goes. I think PC gaming can make a resurgence, but some big changes in the industry need to take place - namely, lower prices and better standardization of components so that users don't experience so many technical & compatibility problems, which are 2 big reasons that many have been driven away from PC over the last few yrs.

If these changes don't happen, I see Consoles continuing to dominate. Consoles will continue to get even more powerful and sophisticated - becoming even more like PC's - but as long as they have standard components/applications, then even if they go a route that allows hardware upgrades, they will avoid the compatibility issues that PC has.

Re: Valve Steps Up, Defends PC Gaming

I showed this to a couple of my friends (Console players) who i have been debating this same question too.

When they saw this they were like. "STFU, WE ALL KNOW CONSOLES ARE WIN"

and im like "Me? Stfu? lolwut? did you just read this? You got pwned. All of you. Valve just made a mockery out of all of you."

then there was an epic moment of silence rofl.....And me doing my victory dance im my head lol.

But seriously, there is nothing wrong with consoles. Its just PC is better. If you disagree, plz gtfo xDDD j/k about the gtfo part. But evereything else is true

I believe consoles are the future, and more and more games will become exclusives on them over PC's. The way the market is heading shows that with the makers of Crysis announcing that they will no longer be making PC exclusive games, but instead focusing on consoles.

Plus, does the release of Bad Company before a PC sequel not say something? It's sad, but unless the PC market reacts to piracy (both end user and developers), prices and compatibility, PC gaming is on a slow road to nowhere.

I think the idea here is that PC Gaming will NOT die. I am a proud owner of a PS3, and have been a long time fan of the PS series. But i am still more attached to my PC than my PS3, as i get bored out of my head on the PS3.

Ne ways i support PC gaming. Piracy should be fought, and mst gaming firms should deal with it. I think the release of Crysis was way premature. As it requires a killer PC to play it at an acceptable rate of game play.

If Crytek had waited, and released there game later one i think it would have sold better.

Sorry to hear you think that. But PC is not going anywhere either. http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/52985 shows a possible expansion pack to Crysis. PC exclusive.

This http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/52982 is RE5 with possible hints of going to PC. Crytek did say they wouldn't stay PC exclusive but they still will have PC as their main platform. Truth is that neither PCs or consoles are going nowhere.
