    IGN Star Wars Game Retrospective

Star Wars is a name everybody should be familiar with. Six thrilling movies, the title which revolutionized merchandising, aliens, spaceships and much more. But games were always a massive part of it as well and so IGN made an article about the beginning, the highs and depths of this part of the Star Wars universe.
1982's film tie-in with the Empire Strikes Back was the first fully fledged Star Wars title, taking the Battle of Hoth as its inspiration and pitting players against a parade of AT-ATs in a game that would heavily inform Jeff Minter's classic Attack of the Mutant Camels.

It was only after George Lucas had truly committed himself to videogames with the formation of Lucasarts in collaboration with Atari in 1983 that the first classic title would emerge with the iconic Star Wars arcade game. The game truly captured the imagination of a legion of funfair dwelling younglings, satiating one obsession and kick-starting another in a game that's impact is still felt today. It could be the cabinet, lovingly decked out like the cockpit of an X-Wing complete with authentic controls and displays, or the clean vector lines that seared their way to the back of the retina and helped create imagery as iconic as that in the film itself. Factor 5's Rogue Squadron III: Rogue Leader even went as far as creating a full-on homage to the arcade original, aping the three level structure of the original with the full graphical sheen of the GameCube.

It was to be the only standout Star Wars title for almost a decade, Lucasarts leaving the license dormant save for a handful of forgettable console tie-ins, the most notable of which – for all the wrong reasons – is 1983's Jedi Arena. A truly abstract take on the art of lightsaber fighting, it boasted a top-down view depicting two duelists in a game that is at the forefront of nominees for the worst use of the Star Wars license.

I liked the game for my first gameboy. Star Wars Galaxies is a great MMO as well.
