Mass Effect PC Copy Protection is Overkill

Looking forward to Mass Effect on the PC? You better be looking forward to re-validating your CD-Key every 10 days or you won't be able to play it anymore. Pirates beware:

Here is BioWare's plan for copy protection:

"Mass Effect PC uses SecuROM which requires an online activation for the first time you play Mass Effect PC after installation. After the first activation, SecuROM requires that it re-check with the server within ten days in order to revalidate the CD key. If it can't contact the server before the 10 days are up, the game still runs and it will re-check until it is successful. If the check is not successfully performed within the 10 day period, Mass Effect will not run until an online check is successful."

Basically, this will punish paying customers while pirates merely circumvent the authentification process altogether (probably). The plan will also allow the game to be activated on 3 PCs at one time.

Mass Effect on the PC releases on May 27, 2008 and features an updated UI. Check out a Q&A on the copy protection at the BioWare Forums.

Well, it may be a pain for the consumer to have to do that, but if that's what it takes from the companies to prevent piracy, can't say I blame them for doing so.

I'm sure like every other grand plan, amazing idea to prevent piracy it will be cracked in a few days, maybe hours, then just leaving the honest guys a load of hassle to go thro this.

Just like DVD's, everytime I watch one I'm forced to watch that stupid film saying how I would't steal a handbag or a car blah blah just to tell me downloading is wrong.. when I have the DVD sitting right there, just another pain in the a$$.

Well as long as it re-checks in the background, and only messages you on screen if it fails then it shouldn't be too much of a hassle.

Pretty much every PC uses broadband and is constantly connected to the internet, so there shouldn't be much complaint about that, and it's not like many people go "offline" for 20 days whilst playing a game, I mean sure you could bring a laptop to another country for a week holiday and play the game with no internet connection, but I doubt in today's modern world you'd be without access for more then 20 days.

Sure it might be cracked in hours, but at least it's a move to combat piracy... and I'm sure "average pirates" won't want to deal with trying to keep up with the amount of "cracks" that may be needed to keep the game running... Tho most "average pirates" only play the SP, complete it then uninstall - which usually happens in less then 10 days...

With five days left, it'll pop up every day like a Norton's Anti-Virus demo, reminding you.

Anyhow, here are my feelings on this issue: http://www.totalgamingnetwork.com/main/blog.php?b=24

this could be a problem depending on two things: 1) the validation system messes up your PC or 2) you are a dirty pirate

So people who don't use the Internet (and there are some) can't play the Game? Brilliant work EA.

I really hope this type of thing isn't implemented in BF3.

If this would work. I mean if I as a paying customer would not be negativle affected and the "pirates" (they are unworthy of that awesome title, should just call them thieves or bums) would be, I would be more than happy to buy this game even if I didn't like the actual gameplay.

                            Jesus...

Mass Effect is great. Its got one of the greatest story of recent games, has a very solid sci fi base, terrific voice actors (Lance Henriksen, just for example) and a very good gameplay for an RPG, something which is usually missing.

You dont see me worried about it because Mass Effect is a great game, and even SecuRom rape is worth it.

And Im willing to bet that youll be bored from Spore in less than 3 days. Last time I checked, single moms and young girls played Sims, what makes you think Spore is any different?

Spore is also a Real Time Strategy game at heart, so three days is a joke statement.

                              Try ten years after mods.
