Call of Duty 4 DLC Map Pack Hands-On

GameSpot recently got the chance to visit Infinity Ward to test out the new DLC that will be released to consoles. Take a look:
We got a chance to chat with IW community relations manager Robert Bowling--better known to COD4 diehards by his online handle, "fourzerotwo"--about the pending downloadable maps. The first thing he told us was the first thing we wanted to hear about this pack: The Middle Eastern and Russian environments will no longer comprise the entirety of the retail game's lineup. Now that the team has moved on from the single-player campaign (and has time to work up some new art assets), we can expect to see new Call of Duty 4 maps set in entirely new locations separate from the original game.

Well, except one of the maps in this pack. It's called Broadcast and is lifted from the Iraqi campaign "Charlie Don't Surf," in which you assault a television station where the enemy is holed up. Don't think the team just copied and pasted the campaign map into this multiplayer pack, though. It does contain the iconic, cavernous main room with its dozens of computer monitors and TV screens, as well as a big map of the world on the wall. We can tell you from experience that that's a great place for multiplayer firefights, with all those cubicles to duck down behind and all that equipment just waiting to get shot up by you or your opponents. A large-scale multiplayer match concentrated in that room is going to be serious calamity.

Thats all fine and dandy, but they should tell us what exactly their doing with the custom maps people are sending in for the Mapping Contest for PC. Theres all this "Maybe we'll do this..." but I want a real reason

^ Yeah, but let's be honest...building hype and expectation is a part of modern-day marketing and sales. Gotta have people wondering and talking about things.

My own opinion...PC will eventually get the same 4 DLC maps Console is getting, but a couple months later - perhaps bundled with the winning mapping contest maps, which will all be playable on ranked servers. Especially if Console DLC will have to be paid for. If Console DLC is free, then I'm guessing we'll also see them sooner than later on PC.

Lol, so true. I have no idea why they won't bring it to the PC -- I guess besides BF2's atrocious showing when it came to downloadable content. I feel that, because of the challenges, ranks, and such, people on the PC would pay for new content that is ranked (the caveat of playing on mod maps).

So I guess Winter Crash is supposed to get us through the rest of the time. Well, whatever.

I'm the first one to agree that it would be silly to withhold finished maps from PC. I just can't see it happening. A delay, maybe...but not denying them completely. I think Winter Crash was a spur-of-the-moment novelty for the holidays...because of the lag-time in getting anything approved by Sony or MS, Consoles never got this map at the time.

However, when you look at the support PC has received thus far, as compared to consoles, we've done well. Yes, there are still some nagging bugs, but we've gotten regular patches fixing the most critical issues here and there. Plus the ability to create new content with mod tools.

From what I've read, Consoles have had a lot of ongoing problems with connectivity and such, and I think they only got their first "real" patches in the past week or so.

Sure hope this pops to PC soon.

Creek looks very similar to that of Overgrown.

                  Broadcast, awesome.
