Infinity Ward Sick To Death Of World War II

Voodoo Extreme has posted up a new article today that discusses why IW is sick to death of doing WWII games. Take a look:
Game Developer Magazine features a Call of Duty 4 development post-mortem this month - here's a choice quote, provided by Gamasutra:

"Call of Duty 4 was Infinity Ward's third Call of Duty game, and as such we approached it knowing we needed to do something fresh. We don't want to pigeonhole ourselves any more than we have to, and many members of the team came off Call of Duty 2 promising never to work on another WWII game.

We tried several different directions, many of which were failures, but the ultimate result was the best game any of us have ever worked on. As a game development experience, it seemed to go so smoothly that it was difficult to come up with five things that went wrong...

Coming off Call of Duty 2, we knew we wanted to do something different for our next game. We don't agree with some critics who say that WWII as a genre is dead, but we couldn't muster the same passion for the subject that we had in our first three WWII games (Call of Duty 1 and 2 and Medal of Honor: Allied Assault).

Gamasutra's article preview also includes Infinity Ward's thoughts on why the PC demo was a failure.

As many of you already know, however, Treyarch will be publishing Call of Duty 5 as a WWII game.

It makes sense when you look at it this way...

      COD3 WWII - Treyarch
      COD4 modern - IW
      COD5 WWII - Treyarch
      [COD6 modern - IW] (theoretical)
      etc.

WWII is still a popular genre, and COD is a very recognizable brand-name for Activision, so they basically are in a win-win situation by letting Treyarch handle WWII, and IW handle the modern setting.

I could imagine that a game developer is 'bored' with a theme after working on it, for what, possibly 4+ years...

WWII has been the FPS mainstream for how many years? If it wasnt WWII, it was crazy future stuff in UT. When BF2 came out, I was amazed about the fact someone used modern equipment.

Saving Private Ryan, The Thin Red Line, Enemy at the Gates, and Band of Brothers all gave the WWII gaming genre a huge push in a relatively short time period (2-3 yrs). There hasn't been as much since (a few decent films here and there, but nothing as blockbuster as those ones).

With the emergence of the 2nd war in the Iraq region, plus Afghanistan, the modern setting is now more in vogue. There's still a WWII market, but it makes sense that modern would be more of a focus, more in the public interest right now.

Another WW2 game.....Would be nice if they include a little known front like fighting in indo-china, cuz fighting Germans in Africa, Normandy and Russia is getting old,
Like what the hell....there have been so many wars in the world since WW2,
Korea, Vietnam, Panama, Grenada, Indo-Pakistani wars, middle-eastern wars, revolutions, and the list goes on and on....like whats this frenzy about WW2 or modern times anyways, I would like to see a post WW2 game for a change, or hell, even WW1 could be interesting.

Everyone can relate to WW2 and not all the other wars and conflicts. Its in history books all over the world and affected a lot of countries. Same with everyone able to relate to modern warfare, because its now.

WW1 doesnt have the weapons and fronts WW2 had. It was trench warfare and they still used horses as vehicles. Tanks were ideas in WW1 and deathtraps for those using the first versions.

but, treyarch is in a win-fail-seoul situation by keeping WWII genre

Watch the Zero Punctuation review for MOHA, and you'll see where I get these ideas from.

To a lot of people, WWII was the last "popular" war. People knew who the enemy was, and they knew that evil needed to be stopped for the safety of the world as a whole. With the wars afterward, we invaded or fought for political reasons, not to save the world from complete conquest. Perhaps that's why people have such an affinity for it.

I think dropping out of a plane every round would get boring after a while.
