Is a Call of Duty MMO Far Off?

The guys over at Kataku offered up an interesting idea for a future Call of Duty title. Activision's head man, Bobby Kotick, hinted that the next leap for the franchise would be to try and take on giants in the MMO world, such as World of Warcraft. Check it out:
"The head cheese at Activision, Bobby Kotick, recently made headlines for his assertion that, in order to compete properly with World of Warcraft, publishers may need to invest nearly a billion dollars in such a venture. Fortunately for Kotick and crew, they now have access to the big brains at Blizzard and Vivendi, a group of folks who know quite a bit about the MMO business. How then, can Activision exploit its biggest earners into even bigger financial monsters?

The Activision CEO says that during the first few months of integration planning with Vivendi, they asked themselves some serious questions about what they consider "the fastest growing markets in the world", including Asian markets and MMOs."

As long as it was a totally separate product, I think it could be very interesting to be able to travel/battle across huge areas, maybe even the whole world, against vast armies. Could be some epic, long-term fights going on. Depending on the price per month, it's something I could get into.

I would still want the "current"-style FPS games though, without the MMO element to them when you just want to play map-to-map, free of charge.

id like it if it had 1000+ perserver. also id like it if it was a world war 1 type of fromt line, where there were constant battle along a proper front line, you could attack/fall back as much as you wanted, but if you did it too much or without notifying any of your comrade, they or you could get cut off and slaughtered. although id hope it wasnt ww1 style weapons( although bolt action rifle are lovely).

ofcourse id hope it was a one time price, and free to play from there on, but if it would be like i hoped, i wouldnt mind paying a small fee per month

It would be cool but the gameplay would change so much. Plus theres many ways they could go about doing this. I think it would be cool if there was a just huge epic battles. With tracers going all over the place. But that would be hard to do.

I play LOTRO and I really don't mind paying $14 bucks a month to play, it can be really fun to run around with a friend shanking random things (I just wish we could shank players more). It would be fun to sit on a hill on a giant map under he cover of some bushes with a friend at the end of the day unwinding about our bosses while we aim for generals on the opposing forces side with our .50 while over the general server chat you here "FU!" and "Where are you MOFU? When I find you I'm going to..." and they get silenced by a bullet meeting them halfway.

Or rigging a bridge and hiding out half the day, discussing the finer points of C4 placement on a dynamic battlefield until the enemy convoy of about 20 players leading a raid on your side tries to cross into your territory and get blown sky high, because in an MMO setting there will be staging areas and when they move you can expect mass casualties from surprise attacks like this.

In BF2 it wasn't uncommon for myself and a friend to sit on a mountain overlooking the map and just chat while we got kills...of course that was until we nailed the commander a couple times and they send the UAV on you closely followed by arti.

I've never played MMO games, but if I understand it correctly, some of the monthly fee goes toward regular new content - like maps, vehicles, specific orders/missions you can carry out, etc. If I'm wrong, then someone who knows, please do correct. If the fee is just for "hanging out" with other people in the gaming world, then that probably wouldn't fly with the FPS-gamers...we're more interested in killing stuff than walking around for days, buying spells, and chatting.

I wouldn't mind running into a squad of the enemy yelling "Leeerrroyyyyy Jennnnnkinnnns!" then blowing them all to hell with an M203 though.

Yeah, im not going to lie, I don't play games to chat, nor would i pay for it. i have real people for that. I would however, love to see epic battles of hundreds of people. I would certainly pay for the ability to recreate all of the WWII battles with real people. Imagine D-day! With different battles going on at the same time, all of which decide the tide of the war.
Say you had two versions of the game allies and axis. You download the corresponding faction for free, then pay a monthly fee. The daily battles are voted on by those who have either the axis or allied client.

I haven't even tought about WoW... I don't like the whole "pay for game time" thing...

But as mentioned before, i'd like to see some huuuuuge battles going on in huuuuge maps.

It would be awesome to participate on that kinda thing. You know, set up ambushes, be on search&destroy mission(and i don't mean weapon boxes you have to destroy, im talking about enemy tanks/patrols), raid villages/towns etc.

And the missions you accomplish would effect the big map. IE you take over town X in west part of the "country or map", that would effect every player and plan made later.

Then there would be these big assaults organized once per day(for example), where people would gather up and start this massive attack on the enemy. And that would be fought on one massive frontline...

I think this could be good, but like...would you have one life!??! You die and you're done? Would you have territories that you could attack, a mass army or something? IF there are hundreds of people, or thousands, could a man make his own army, defect, gather some men, (like a guild of sorts) then take up some area and whoop ***? I mean that would be intense. Give some orders to people to go take a bridge or something ya. That would be awesome.

As whiskey said, pay to play is good and bad, I don't think it would draw the same crowd, though there are like 7 million on WoW, but like, it would help pay for the maps and things as he said, and it also help with servers keeping the traffic down ad such.

I would really like to see this as armies, set up before the game, people could rank up as in the real military, and then from there people can break off and make their on army. Set up their own Generals and whatnot, then conquer the surrounding area. You would basically start from owning a building, to a city, to the world? i mean DAMN that would be awesome.

Not one life... That would kinda ruin it, but would bring realism to it.. If you die, you can spawn at the "HQ" or in the supply depo(or whatever) behind the lines...

This kinda thing is on Flysis(space shooter thingy). You fly around with these aircrafts, collecting XP from these "bugs" flying around. More lvl, the better weapons, and different kinda things unlocks, like lvl 30, you can make your own brigade and invite people to it.

Most fun part about the game is the "factions." You have to choose side after few training missions. And these two factions are at war. So you can fly from map to map hunting these guys down. When there is huuuge fight going on, when you get shot down, you can choose if you want to spawn back at the home city or previous "safe" map.

There is one General Manager who organizes everything. IE he can set up wars with the other factions GM...

                      Here's more about Flysis. http://flysis.com/GameGuide/Ace.php
                      btw it's free

But anyways, if someone makes MMO with FPS aspects, i might get interested about it...

If you have to pay monthly, they can diaf. Otherwise I think it would be cool having a server with maps that are really large and huge amounts of people, hmm maybe even vehicles and jets? I have no idea what they intend for it to be like, but if its anything like I described I'm in.

The funny thing about the flysis is that they had to shutdown the earlier game because of some legal issues.

Now with this one, they had to already change the name from Flysis to AirRockets(or whatever it was)...

I guess that some people never learns...
