While I don't actually condone what he said. Last time I looked we still had freedom of speech in this country. So I don't see how he could possibly be prosecuted for just saying your going to do something. Lord knows I've talked a bunch of crap and never had any intensions of following through with it. I would sure hate to be thrown in jail just for saying something stupid.

Not to turn this into a debate, but "freedom of speech" and things like "uttering threats" are 2 different things.

Just like if you say "bomb" at an airport...you'll be in handcuffs very quickly. Or at a job, if you say to someone "I'm gonna kill you", and it's not someone you know/you're not joking, then you could be in serious trouble if that person reports it to police.

Freedom of speech doesn't mean one can say absolutely ANYTHING one wants. It's more designed so that you're able to believe in whatever religion, political system, lifestyle etc, etc you want, and to be free to talk about it without fear. But you can't threaten or encroach upon the lives and freedoms of others.

Anyway, if you read the article, it sounds like this clown didn't make a simple comment, but talked about it quite a bit while online - enough to make people worried. In almost all those recent shootings in schools/malls in the US, there were warning signs that were not acted upon that could've saved lives.

That same sentiment - ignorning threats made by people both in person and on the Net - has led to many tragedies over the yrs. You simply can't take anything for granted these days. Yes, most will turn out to be nothing, but you can't take the chance that the next one may turn out to be real.

thats kinda dumb to blame the Government or anyone else besides that person or kid... the only game I'd blame for deaths is WoW, I could come up with so many examples of people dying from either playing that game or related to it in some form.

What annoys me about this is the negative spin it has applied to the gaming industry and CoD4 in particular. For the layman, just reading the title of the article, it would imply that the kid became twisted and prone to violence because of playing a particular FPS. Seems to me that the industry should have jumped on this quickly and pointed out (like someone else did here in the forum) that it was fellow gamers that keyed in on this kid's plausible threat and did the right thing...a kudo/positive thing for the gaming community.
