  • Battlefield Pirates 2 Mod Update

The Battlefield Pirates 2 mod team has posted up a new update showcasing a new ship. Take a look:
Following two releases, an interview, and lots of planning for the future, we're happy to return back to reporting the latest news in development with our first media release since the open beta. Today, we're proud to present a fabulous piratey piece of work by ½Hawk, the brig. For a change, this update focuses on nautical aspects of the brig as a vessel from the 16th and 17th centuries.

In nautical terms, brigs are square-rigged vessels with two masts. For their size, brigs were fast and maneuverable boats that were used both as naval and merchant ships. The brig is not to be confused with the brigantine, which differs from the brig in many ways, most notably so that the brigantine's aft sail isn't square-rigged. By definition, however, neither are ships. Typically, the term ship referred to vessels with three or more masts. Thus, with only two masts, it is not a ship. Today, under American law, a ship is a vessel that is longer (overall length, not wetted area) than 65 feet, about 20 meters.

In this next release, we've preparing quite a pack of new maps - many with plenty of open water to set sail on. This new ship is quite a bit larger than the Cutter (the biggest drivable ship in R1) as shown in the pic with the meshes showing. There will be fixes to the blunderbuss reload time, the sniper musket and several other goodies to show off as well.

hehe, main problem with doing something like that is there is a max poly count you can import into BF2 as 1 mesh, why the carrier static and the kubrah dam static are split into diffrent bits to get around the max polys, and a ship you can move (PCO) has to be 1 object, so if it was going to be made would have to be really low detail for that size

Yep - thats why the tallships on Dead Calm are immobile. We started with a model that was nearly 300k polys and I cut it down to just 60k but even that is too much for the exporter to handle. The other thing that makes larger multi-tier ships difficult is that you cant attach ladders or ropes to vehilces, and the physics walking around is simply awful.
